Sinopsis:
Una hombre se vuelve loco cuando unos agentes federales lo investigan. (FILMAFFINITY)
THE BIG OPERATOR is one obscure film that really pays off any trouble it takes to find it. This realistically-filmed, surprisingly violent picture has a terrific, if two-dimensional, performance from Mickey Rooney in the lead as the ruthless union boss "Little Joe Braun". The actor must have had a field day saying lines like:
"You don't turn anybody on fire until I tell you to! Ya unnerstand?!"
There is also a pretty good acting performance by singer Mel Torme as one of Braun's victims. And Mamie Van Doren is effective in a low-key role as a typical 1950s housewife. Seven-year-old Jay North is very well-cast as her son. While Ray Danton, Laurence Dobkin, Jim Backus and Jackie Coogan add plenty of lively interest.
But two things make THE BIG OPERATOR a standout among lesser B-movies. One is the unexpected brutality of the violence. There are several well-staged fight scenes that look more than convincing. One of Braun's victim's suffers a horrific, fiery revenge. And midway through the film, there is a long scene of torture that rivals (and perhaps inspired) the famous 'ear scene' in RESERVOIR DOGS. This is just the kind of movie Tarantino loves, and chances are he's familiar with it.
The other distinguishing feature of THE BIG OPERATOR is the performance of Steve Cochran as Bill Gibson, a witness who is slated to testify against Braun. It's Gibson who must undergo the lengthy torture and intimidation. Cochran brings so much conviction to his role, so much strength, humanity and sympathy, that it's tempting to call this his best screen performance. In a scene where his son is brought to him (both of them blindfolded) Cochran superbly expresses a mixture of bravery and fear, raising the scene to a level far above what we might expect in this type of film.
THE BIG OPERATOR also boasts a fine jazz score by Van Alexander. Director Charles Haas never lets the pace drag in this action-packed, minor gem of a movie. A must-have for Cochran fans.
