Sin duda me apunto, no voy a encontrar otro ripeo que sea más fiel y respete en condiciones la imagen del Blu, asi que muchas gracias.

Del apartado técnico como veo que nadie quiere comentar nada, dejo información sobre la gran controversia de esta película... Aspect Ratio original...

The interesting thing about this is, you'll note that in the interview above Vitali never mentions Barry Lyndon specifically. Just yesterday, however, Vitali did an interview with film critic Glenn Kenny, in which he specifically addresses the Barry Lyndon aspect ration issue, and claims that the film's original aspect ratio was NEVER 1.66, but was ALWAYS 1.77 - and that Kubrick shot it in 1.77 and intended it to be seen 1.77! [Editor's Note: Some of you have wondered why I haven't commented further on this issue in recent days, and the reason is that we'd asked for - and been waiting for - Vitali himself to weigh in with an official statement on the issue. Now he has.] In any case, Glenn's interview is well worth reading. To be sure, it's hard to find vintage evidence that the film was really intended to be 1.77, but the article notes - and we've confirmed - that Taschen's The Stanley Kubrick Archive book (published in 2004) lists the film's aspect ratio as 1.77 (see the scan below, reproduced from page 4 of the book). Indeed, all the printed film frame images from Barry Lyndon in the book are presented at exactly 1.77.

To be fair, the book was published after Stanley's death, so it will not be seen as definitive to some fans. I also know there are those who feel that Vitali is an unreliable source on this issue, has contradicted himself and/or has revised his opinion on the matter. I can't and will not comment on that. All I can say is that I've met Leon personally and found him to be a very genuine and sincere person, who clearly cares about the presentation quality of Stanley's films. But of course, that's neither here nor there in terms of resolving this controversy. In any case, the Kubrick estate has obviously decided that the proper presentation of Barry Lyndon in HD is at the 1.78:1 aspect ratio. Warner's mastering department directly confirmed that with the estate, and that IS the aspect ratio in which Barry Lyndon now appears on Blu-ray. This may not settle the matter in the minds of some Kubrick fans, but short of Stanley himself speaking to the subject from The Great Beyond somehow, that's about as definitive a clarification as we're ever likely to get. So 1.78 is it for Barry Lyndon. And for us here at The Bits, at least, issue resolved (if not satisfactorily settled for some of you).

In any case, our thanks to Glenn Kenny for a great effort to clarify the issue in as much as may be possible. There's nothing like stepping into a little controversy, is there?

[Editor's Note: I was talking with with Doogan this afternoon on the subject - who did the original Vitali interview with me back in 2001 - and he made an interesting observation. It's well known that after Stanley's death, a vast archive of his research material and notes were left behind. This archive was the subject of Jon Ronson's excellent 2008 Stanley Kubrick's Boxes documentary (which we certainly hope will appear on DVD or BD soon) and it was also this source material that was combed through meticulously as part of the preparation of the making of Taschen's The Stanley Kubrick Archives book. It's easy to wonder what might have changed between 2001 and 2004 that the estate finally decided the proper aspect ratio for Barry Lyndon was 1.77 and not 1.66 as originally believed. Todd rightly suggests that it's entirely possible that the estate discovered something in Stanley's notes or files that led them to this new conclusion. We may never know for sure, but it does appear that it was during the process of sorting and archiving all of this research and material that the decision was made to go with 1.77 for the film. Just something to consider.]

La realidad si es 1.66 o 1.77 pues como siempre dependerá en gran parte del interés comercial porque la verdad absoluta se antoja complicado. He buscado capturas y los compañeros de mundodvdtienen como siempre la comparativa hecha, del DVD a 1.60 vs Bluray a 1.77 (no comparamos imagen que hay notables diferencias, hablamos del AR)

En esta primera captura, no hay un recorte forzado es bastante llevadero, al igual que en la siguiente comparativa

Un primer plano como el siguiente ya puede crear ya favoritismos hacia uno u otro AR:

En este caso veo (al margen de la ganancia en calidad de imagen) más "natural" el 1.77. Como bien apunta atticus en mundodvd, hay alguna captura como la siguiente:



donde el 1.6 con ese recorte por encima justo de los tobillos pues como que no me gusta mucho, asi que en ese caso o bien se abre al 1.33 y muestra el cuerpo entero o bien el recorte se va más arriba como en el Bluray, aunque esto es una opinión personal, no pasa de ahí.

Para crear más confusión al tema, circula una carta de la época firmada por el propio Kubrick...



En resumen si la carta es cierta, kubrick filmó Barry Lyndon para un 1.66 y por tando el encuadre del DVD es más cercano a sus desesos con un AR exacto de 1.6. Si hacemos casos a Vitali, la Warner tomó una decisión acertada editando este Bluray a 1.77.
