Pascal, un pocero rural, tiene una bella hija de dieciocho años a la que ha mandado a París. Sueña con que ella se case con su socio y amigo Felipe, pero resulta que se ha enamorado de Jacques, en la gran ciudad. Cuando la chica se queda embarazada, Jacques debe partir al frente.

Marcel Pagnot, que había dirigido a Fernandel en Angéle (1934) y Régain (1937), adaptaciones de obras de Jean Giono, volvió a contar con el cómico, que por entonces empezaba a hacerse muy popular (DeCine21).

Faced with estrangement from her father, denial by Jacques' family, and the news that Jacques himself is missing in action, will Patricia agree to marry Felipe?

Patricia, la fille du puisatier, s'éprend de Jacques, un bel aviateur, et se donne à lui. Peu après, le jeune homme doit partir au Front et ne pouvant pas prévenir Patricia, il remet une lettre à sa mère. Mais celle-ci brûle le message. AMG SYNOPSIS: The Well-Digger's Daughter served to reunite star Raimu and writer/director Marcel Pagnol, who'd earlier scored an international hit with the "Marseilles trilogy" (Fanny, Marius, Cesar). The title character played by Josette Day, is impregnated by aviator George Gray. Her father, Raimu, orders Josette out of the house so that her younger sisters won't be likewise "corrupted". There's many a moment of pathos and hilarity before Raimu realizes the folly of his behavior. Filmed in 1940, just after France's acquiescence to their Nazi conquerors, The Well-Digger's Daughter didn't make it to the US until 1946. -- Hal Erickson
