SYNOPSIS:
Killer Red Kluger (Charles McGraw) busts out of Folsom Prison and makes for a bleak desert hideout. But first he makes a violent detour to Los Angeles to kidnap the three people he blames for his ticket to the gas chamber: a cop (Michael O’Shea), the DA (Frank Conroy) and ex-girlfriend (Virginia Grey) he believes betrayed him. Before Red gets out of the country, he’s going to get even, one sweating, sadistic murder at a time.
In this gripping, relentlessly paced B-movie, film noir great McGraw – who breathed menace even when he played a cop or a detective – dominates the screen with a presence so ice-cold cruel not even the pitiless Mojave sun could melt it. Jittery with fear and suspense, The Threat is the kind of little-known gem every film fan rejoices in discovering.

Storyline
At Folsom Prison, several inmates escape...including killer Arnold Kluger, who swore revenge on the detective and district attorney who convicted him. Despite precautions, the two men are soon in Kluger's power, together with showgirl Carol whom he suspects of informing on him. At a shack in the California desert, Kluger, two henchmen, and four hostages wait, and wait, for an escape plane that may never come.
Written by Rod Crawford <puffinus@u.washington.edu>

Despite its B-movie budget, THE THREAT is an exciting, tightly controlled film that never lets its audience down. McGraw is a vicious killer who breaks out of prison and is determined to get even with everyone responsible for putting him there. He kidnaps O'Shea, the cop who arrested him; Conroy, the district attorney who convicted him; and Grey, the nightclub singer McGraw is convinced ratted on him in the first place. Shayne is the cop who must stop McGraw and rescue the hostages. The film becomes a violent cat-and-mouse game among the principals, with tension that doesn't let up. The performances are also excellent. McGraw is the quintessential psychotic, drawing his character well and making him terrifyingly believable. The direction pays close attention to all details, from police investigations to tense confrontations. It's films like this that the writers and directors of the French New Wave rightfully recognized as true cinema.

Although "The Threat," which arrived yesterday as company for the Palace's vaudeville, does not deviate too noticeably from the pattern set by previous cops-and-killers adventures, it does feature a brutal killer, who is as tough a menace as has chilled the customers in a long time. And, the melodramatic business this vengeful, escaped convict goes through does have the attribute of being brisk and reasonably well written.
Not that this story is likely to set new standards. For it is still program fare having to do with the kidnapping by the aforementioned gunman of the cop, the district attorney, and a double-dealing girl friend, who helped jail him. This hard gent and his equally hard sidekicks do get their just deserts but not before the hostages are whisked across the countryside and are subjected to some vicious cat-and-mouse tactics.
Charles McGraw is first-rate as the gravel-voiced, square-jawed, ruthless gangster, while Michael O'Shea, Virginia Grey and Frank Conroy chip in with adequate portrayals of the cop, district attorney and gangster's moll. Crime, after all, does not pay, but Mr. McGraw can make it diverting.
