SUMMARY
At the core of Without Trace is a story about a young girl who is the daughter a prominent doctor. When the girl goes missing her father gets the police to jump into action because of his class status / wealth. Early on this provides one in the story this provides one of the many intricate back stories. There is a loose cannon detective who takes offense to the fact that the police bend over backwards when someone of wealth is involved and drag their feet when it is someone from a poverty background. Things quickly change when the young girls body is discovered and this detective become more sympathetic towards her.
10,000 Bullets review
A teenage girl from a wealthy family mysteriously disappears. After her body is found at the bottom of a lake the police begin an intense investigation that leads to a teenage prostitution ring and several more bloody murders, but the actual killer may be someone much closer to the home.
Lazarillo on IMDB
NOTES
A high school student goes missing after lying to her parents that she is studying at her friend's place. Her father, a prominent doctor, uses his stature and connections to spring the police into action. The "mobile team" of the local police is given the case. At first the girl's disappearance is treated as a typical case of teenager running away from home, but when her body is discovered in a lake near Rome, thorough investigation starts to expose the black underbelly of the Roman high class.
Antonio Sabato stars as the lead investigator. His tough but fair commissario role fits him much better than the character in Seven Bloodstained Orchids for example. That's because he doesn't need to carry the film all by himself. Many familiar Italian genre film stars are also on board. Luciana Paluzzi, who usually plays vixen roles, is surprisingly cast as a social worker, who genuinely cares about the case. As some reviews mention her role is reminiscent of Giovanna Ralli's role in Massimo Dallamano's What Have They Done to Your Daughters?. Gabriele Ferzetti plays the father of the missing girl and Enrico Maria Salerno is the police chief of "mobile team," who is constantly battling against his superiors.
Mario Caiano's The Maniac Responsible (...a tutte le auto della polizia, 1975), or Without Trace like the new Mya Communications DVD reads, is an intriguing cocktail of popular Italian sub-genres and themes of mid-70's. At the core there is a giallo-style murder-mystery, but instead of having a typical amateur sleuth the investigation is carried out by the police. The meticulous police procedural gives the film more serious tone than most giallo films possess, and themes like teenage prostitution and corruption are introduced and used as red herrings. The investigation gives way to abundance of grisly murders, point-of-view shots and other giallo staples in the final act, when the police close in on the killer.
The Maniac Responsible makes the viewer almost uncomfortable from the starting scene, where father of an under-aged girl is taking photos of her in a skimpy bikini. The following scene, where many key suspects are introduced when the girl walks around the pool asking her father's friends what they want to drink, continues setting the strange vibe, which ties together the whole film and its themes. You aren't quite sure what to feel, when all the men are eyeing the petite girl.
Caiano direction isn't as experimental as one would expect. He's more to-the-point kind of a director, who doesn't let the visual trickery to get in the way of telling a story. While the visual output and music score can be described as forgettable, it's the serious tone, coherent story and mix of genres that makes this giallo to be among the best entries of the genre.
