Sinopsis:
Josephine no tiene amigos para jugar, vive en una casa alejada del pueblo en medio del campo y no hay niños por los alrededores. Sus padres no pueden prestarle toda la atención que a ella le gustaría y cuando por fin empieza a ir al colegio es solo para encontrarse con las burlas de sus compañeros. En sus juegos solitarios se topa de vez en cuando con el jardinero, un barbudo misterioso que se parece a las terribles estampas de Dios que su padre el predicador tiene por la casa . Entonces aparece Hugo...
Comentario:
Por aquí os traigo otra peli del cine infantil y juvenil nórdico. En este caso se trata de uno de los clásicos que dió origen al género. Su éxito de crítica y público abrió el camino dentro de la industria a unas producciones que, tal y como hace Kjell Grede en esta Hugo y Josephine, buscaban trasladar al lenguaje cinematográfico el modo de contar historias sobre niños y adolescentes de la ya por entonces larga tradición de literatura infantil y juvenil nórdica. Un modo que tiene como característica fundamental el respetar cuidadosamente la mirada de su público potencial. Y para ello nada mejor que contar para la adaptación con una de las grandes autoras del género-y responsable de la novela original-, la escritora María Gripe, que llevaba ya años buscando ópticas alternativas y emancipadoras para narrar sus historias con jóvenes protagonistas. Sin embargo, a pesar de su procedencia literaria, la película es principalmente una propuesta visual. Parece que tanto Grede como Gripe coincidieron en la idea de trasladar el espíritu de la historia por encima de su argumento, y para ello experimentar con el sonido y la imagen para acercarse a esa mirada infantil. El resultado es una fábula de apariencia plácida y encantadora-y sin duda lo es- pero que, como los buenos cuentos, no deja de lado una visión mas oscura o dramática, y en definitiva mas compleja (con apuntes hacia un humanismo libertario, dejados caer de manera sutil para quien los quiera ver). Y todo ello sin dejar de ofrecer una película perfecta para la chavalería.
He pasado a la mula el rip de Karagarga, ya tiene al menos una fuente completa además de la mía, está en lanzamiento pero la distribución llevará su tiempo, os pediría que si podeis la dejarais un tiempecillo compartiendo una vez la tengais completa.
Los subtítulos los he traducido del inglés, eran muy pocas líneas y como ya había cogido carrerilla pues ayer por la tarde me puse a ello y voilá.
Por supuesto la peli es firme candidata a entrar en la filmografía de Infancia y Adolescencia Autogestionada, en la que estais invitados a participar.

"HUGO and Josephine" is an extraordinary Swedish color film of deceptive simplicity and real beauty, outward and inward. Ostensibly a children's picture, it was a perfect choice for the youngsters and accompanying elders who streamed into Philharmonic Hall Saturday afternoon.
It is hard to imagine anybody not being caught up in the spell of this small, gentle masterpiece about two children, their private kingdom of nature and their relationship with a wise giant of a gardener.
This striking first feature film of a new director-scenarist named Kjell Grede would have been exquisite even in black-and-white, but the exquisite color photography makes it fresh, movving and memorable.
Very little actually happens. The incidents unfold quietly from the viewpoint of the youngsters, two marvelously appealing little tykes named Marie Ohman and Fredrik Becklen. The little heroine is the daughter of a pastor (heard, but unseen) and a loving mother. The child longs for a playmate and finds one in a school chum, the nephew of the parsonage gardener. This enigmatic giant, a kindly vagabond played with strong warmth by Beppe Wolgers, watches the children at play, soothes some perplexities and finally tells them goodbye. That's it.
The film flows naturally, beautifully and often amusingly, with wordless stretches where the wondrously real settings absorb the children, even as they dominate the picture. And it is perhaps Mr. Grede's supreme achievement that while the picture holds to the fresh innocence of a child's viewpoint, most of the vignettes are fraught with adult meaning, without being contrived.
In one sequence, the children uneasily explore a dark factory only to have young Becklen as Hugo emerge in triumph, wheeling down the road on a huge, old-style bicycle, a surprise that drew a delighted ovation from the Saturday audience.
Another delight is the tender bit where the bruinlike gardener and the little girl sway to a Brahms waltz. Beethoven, Handel and a random hymn or two make up the remaining musical background. But the radiant loveliness of the natural backgrounds, in muted tints, seems to be speaking a language of its own, alongside the good English subtitles.
The movie closes with the roadside parting of the children and their adult friend, a strange and original vignette that is one of the loveliest and most poignant microcosms ever put on film.
Warner Brothers-Seven Arts has had the foresight to acquire "Hugo and Josephine" for American release. They have one of the few films or recent years that can be called truly endearing.
