Wojciech Has's first colour masterpiece, adapted from Boleslaw Prus's novel, revolving around a working class tradesman who is respected for his ability to make money but still unable to transcend the class system in his pursuit of Isabella, the titular doll.

Whilst vast in scope, Has nevertheless brings a remarkable focus to the proceedings, filling each beautifully composed frame with detail. Saturated in colour, rich with texture and replete with his trademark tracking shots, this ranks alongside The Hourglass Sanatorium and The Saragossa Manuscript as his most outstanding acheivement.
