Un film de Nikos Koundouros
Lucky Luciano @ Karagarga escribió:Nikos Koundouros’ 1963 adaptation of the Longus’ ancient text “Daphnis and Chloe” into a moody, existentialist dissection of erotic obsession will invigorate those who love avant-garde cinema while disturbing those who are uncomfortable with the subject of youth sexuality.

Set in 200 BC, the story follows a group of male shepherds who arrive at a seaside location populated entirely by women. They are the wives of the local fishermen, who are all out at sea.

There is relatively little contact between the groups, with two exceptions. The youngest member of the shepherds, a boy named Skymnos, begins a near-silent relationship with the girl Chloe that fumbles and bumbles slowly into their mutual discovery of love and sex. (If you have problems with films about kids inching towards sexual maturity, this film will tilt your “ick” factor.)

Then there is an older shepherd, Tsakalos, who becomes infatuated with the beautiful Arta. Her husband is away at sea and she is occupying her time trapping birds in nets, only to set them free immediately. Unlike the younger pair, this duo embarks on a series of enigmatic conversations that seem closer in spirit to Antonioni or Resnais instead of Longus.

Director Nikos Koundouros on the film:
"It is the film of desperation. A desperation, which is described in beautiful blue waters in the Aegear Sea, with two young kids exploring their bodies. Desperation because we had discredited, abolished and immobilized ourselves, we, who had fought, who had raised our voices, who had demonstrated for a new world. There was nothing for us to dc In my desperation, I decided to work on nothingness. This is a film about ideological nothingness."

Shot entirely in black and white Young Aphrodites recreates the pulsating sexual awakening of a boy whose simplistic world is shattered to pieces when passion is discovered. Avoiding unnecessary dialog while relying on sumptuous vistas from the unknown island pic creates a distinctive exotic feel.
Similar to Visconti's classic La Terra Trema (1948) pic also relies on the presence of local fishermen whose acting provides a sense of authenticity. Additionally, where dialog is absent cinematographer Giovanni Varriano enhances pic's exotic aura by focusing on the island's natural beauty (lines are sporadic and intentionally kept to a minimum).
Pic's pacing, however, is surprisingly consistent and in sync with the pervading sense of melancholy Koundouros favors. The introduction of a secondary plot where an older couple imitates the sexual game the young protagonists play is unexpected yet logical - the older couple's deeds are obviously symbolic.
Young Aphrodites' greatest accomplishment however is the perfect blending of music with visuals. Traditional Greek instruments are used for the creation of a powerful soundtrack which not only compliments the narrative but at times has a role of its own.
Lastly, Koundouros does not provide a logical conclusion to his story, he halts it. Still, exceptional camera work and a sense of authenticity hold pic together very well negating a few minor flaws.

I will refer to the way an ancient Greek novel was adapted to the screen. This novel is Longus? well-known pastoral romance Daphnis and Chloe also called Pastorals, written, based on all indications, in the second half of the 2nd century AD. As far as I know, no other ancient Greek novel has been made into a film since, even a few years ago, most of these texts had not yet been translated and were completely unknown to the public. However, Longus is famous: his work has been translated into modern Greek several times, he has received Goethe?s eternal praise for its completeness and appeal. Longus has also inspired many musicians, painters and other artists.[?]
Koundouros?s starting point is Longus and, primarily, the theme of the two young heroes? initiation to love. However, the setting, though also belonging to an earlier period, is completely different from Longus? bucolic surroundings. Even the title of the film bears no relation to Longus: Young Aphrodites define the director?s main concern. Koundouros uses a version of the "mythical method", known from poetry. Pastorals define the framework and his story is linked to the old romance, but the rest has little to do with Longus. Because of this, Koundouros?s story could be read outside the context of Pastorals ? and it is read. However, since the archetypal story of the two young lovers dominates the film, the dimensions of Young Aphrodites overcome the temporary and the contemporary. Pastorals are the starting point; they provide the sensual atmosphere and the mystery of initiation, but the contemporary creator remains independent. The use of the past is now realised through a new story based on an old one; it is a new "mythology" based on antiquity. Therefore, we have the genesis of a myth ? as Elytis would say when commenting on the way the poets of his era used mythology. Obviously, this is extremely interesting, though this attempt had no successors.

The sexual instinct of the adults will be gradually steeped in the rocks and the sea, and spread even to the two young children, slowly shaping their vague sexual desire. This is the central element of the film: austere setting, costumes that reveal the bodies? sexual nature, faces and gazes revealing love?s dominant presence. Nature-Earth, water and air ? and the bodies overcome the rudimentary myth and independently create their own romantic narrative. The continual rearrangement of bodies and spaces composes a constant renewal, which narrates the libidinal dialogue among bodies, between the elements of nature and between bodies and nature. Through a carefully created architectural construction, the audience is able to gradually distinguish pleasure and pain, serenity and violence, the whispers and the screams of contradictory, yet enjoyable, erotic discourse.

Impresionante, kimki.
Nikos Koundouros (Greek: Νίκος Κούνδουρος), is a Greek film director, born in Agios Nikolaos, Crete in 1926. He studied painting and sculpture at the Athens School of Fine Arts, and was later exiled because of his political beliefs to the Makronissos island. At the age of 28 he decided to follow a career in cinematography, and started his career as a director of the film Magiki Polis (1954), where he combined his neorealism influences with his own artistic viewpoint. After the release of his complex and innovative film O Drakos, he found acceptance as a prominent artist in Greece and Europe, and has acquired important awards in various international and Greek film festivals.
