Synopsis

Alors qu'il rentre chez lui au volant de son camion, le chauffeur routier Jean Chape roule sur un corps. Pensant avoir percuté un piéton, il se rend au commissariat le plus proche. L'autopsie révèle que la victime était déjà morte avant l'accident. Bien connue des services de police, la victime n'est autre que Scopo, un gangster notoire. Bientôt la bande du malfrat harcèle Jean Chape pour récupérer une mallette contenant 5 millions que Scopo avait en sa possession au moment de sa mort. Avec l'aide de sa maîtresse, la douce Alice, et à un vieil ami, Serin, il tient tête au gang.

Although popular at the time, Gas-Oil now resembles an inconsequential lightweight thriller. Its main interest value probably lies in its impressive cast list. Jean Gabin is on fine form and exudes charm and charisma, having managed a spectacular come-back with Jean Becker’s Touchez pas au Grisbi two years earlier. His co-star is none other than Jeanne Moreau, who would soon become one of the icons of French cinema, largely through her contribution to the New Wave. Roger Hanin also appears in a supporting role, very earlier in his acting career, but playing the kind of tough role he would become best known for in the following decades.
Although typical of the period it comes from, the film leaves a great deal to be desired, largely because it is such an unsatisfying mix of genres. The touching May to December romance of Gabin and Moreau is soon muddled with a third rate gangster plot which looks as if it has been lifted from the pages of a boy’s comic strip. The humour which one normally associates with Gilles Grangier’s films is strangely lacking, as is any sense of menace. Even the ending where the bad guys are rounded up by the heroes looks overly contrived and half-hearted.
Although the Gabin-Moreau pairing is enjoyable to watch, the film as a whole, whilst competently shot with plenty of location work, just singularly fails to gel.

El audio en español lo he sacado de una grabación en vhs de la tele. Es mi primera sincronización, pero mis conejillos de indias me han dado un aprobado (gracias ancademi y Antono).Mi agradecimiento también a carbayonjovial por su estupendo hilo para sincronizar el audio VHS a un DVDrip.

Es una joyita del cine francés de la postguerra. Con un maduro Jean Gabin y una jovencísima Jeanne Moreau, entre otros méritos.
