As most people who have seen this film may know, the original ending (and actually parts of the beginning as well) have been edited without Saul Bass's consent after poor assessments at test screenings and due to the fact that his final montage was deemed "too much like 2001". Even the trailer of the movie contained snippets of the original ending that were actually not to be found in the final version of the film anymore.
Considered lost for almost 40 years, footage of the original ending has been found in 2012 and screened on a couple of occassions during the last few years. Now it is finally available to audiences at home through new releases in the UK and France.
I don't know if the decision was made because of the slightly worse video quality of the original footage (still very good quality overall) or if there were any licensing issues but the original ending has not been reintegrated into a kind of Director's Cut but is just an extra on the new Bluray editions. I thought it would be nice to have the original version of the film (or as close as we will ever get to it) in one proper high-quality file to watch it in one go without having to skip around between materials. So I edited the files together properly (you might notice a slight shift in video quality and color timing around the 70 minute mark but it's not too bad).
Since I really like this odd 70's creature feature, I edited the audio commentary that is included on the UK Bluray and the subtitles as well to have everything together for this 88 minute "original" cut.
