Sinopsis: Serie de viñetas entrelazadas por un personaje o una situación que conecta una historia con la siguiente. Unos soldados franceses entran a la catedral de Toledo durante la invasión napoleónica. Un capitán besa la estatua de una mujer y destruye la de un hombre. En la época actual, un matrimonio se escandaliza con unas postales que muestran monumentos de París. Un hombre ve pasar unos animales por su cuarto. En una escuela de policías, un gendarme dicta una lección sobre las distintas costumbres antropológicas. Un asesino es dejado en libertad después de matar a 18 personas. Una multitud furiosa asalta un zoológico gritando lemas de la resistencia anti-napoleónica, mientras un avestruz mira directamente al espectador. (FILMAFFINITY)

Catorce historias distintas, unidas a veces por personajes comunes. El argumento comienza en 1808, cuando las tropas napoleónicas asaltan Toledo. En el momento actual, unas niñas topan con un hombre, con pinta de pederasta, que les ofrece unas sospechosas postales. El padre de una de las niñas se va a la cama y es testigo de asombrosas apariciones inesperadas.

Buñuel propone estrambóticas situaciones que critican las convenciones sociales y, como es habitual en su filmografía, también la religión. Filmada cuando el cineasta tenía 74 años, éste incluye muchas anécdotas entresacadas de sus propias vivencias. Destaca el episodio de la Guerra de la Independencia, con el recibimiento de los ciudadanos de Toledo a los franceses al grito de "Viva las cadenas", en alusión a que preferían al absolutista Fernando VII a ser invadidos.
El título parece ser un homenaje descarado al Manifiesto Comunista de Marx y Engels, y a su célebre frase de apertura ("Un fantasma recorre Europa"). (DeCine21)

AMG SYNOPSIS: One of Luis Buñuel's most episodic films, The Phantom of Liberty focuses on no one particular narrative. In the beginning, a man sells postcards of French tourist attractions, calling them "pornographic." A sniper in Montparnasse is hailed as a hero for killing passersby. A "missing" child helps the police fill out the report on her. A group of monks play poker, using religious medallions as chips, and in the most infamous sequence, a formally dressed social group gathers at toilets around a table, occasionally excusing themselves to go into little stalls in a private room to eat. -- John Voorhees

AMG REVIEW: In his next to last film, the great Luis Buñuel makes a hilarious assault on the notion that the human race is in any sense free. As with many of his late masterpieces, such as The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie and The Milky Way, the director strings together a series of anarchic events tinged with the surrealism that had been his signature since he helped found the influential art movement in the 1920s and 1930s. In one, a pair of detectives search for a missing girl who is right in front of them, and in another, a group of aristocrats defecate publicly at a formal dinner, while secreting themselves to perform the shameful act of eating. Always a faithful Freudian, the director insists on the powerful role of unconscious processes in determining our behavior and the arbitrariness of the elaborate social arrangements which result therefrom. Appropriately, the film opens in anarchy and ends with cries of "long live chains." -- Michael Costello
