- In March 1925 Vertov released his last issue of Cine-Pravda. The following year he completed two seminal, feature-length documentary films that inspired or perplexed the film world. Forward, Soviet! and A Sixth Part of the World left no one indifferent. These two films in a year pulverised received notions of non-fiction film and newsreel. On the ruins Vertov constructed the mighty edifice of documentary, changing film for ever.
At the same time, this transition from newsreel was one Vertov had initiated with his Cine-Pravda series, and was largely inspired by journalistic models. Forward, Soviet! and A Sixth Part of the World use newsreel, found and unstaged footage, not simply to show, or record, but to construct an argument, to move and to persuade their audience. Their novelty lies in doing so in more extensive fashion and in more consistent manner than Cine-Pravda. Yet the reasons why Vertov moved to longer films owes much to the specific circumstances of Soviet newsreel in this period.
