Sinopsis y Comentario: Segunda Guerra Mundial. Area del Pacífico. 1943. El coronel Nicholson (Alec Guinness) y sus hombres están confinados en un campo de prisioneros japonés. Se ocupan de la construcción de un puente majestuoso. Nicholson se mantiene firme en sus convicciones tradicionales. Mediante su trabajo y su dedicación a este proyecto, Nicholson confía en distraer a sus hombres y mantener alta su moral. De esta manera tratan de justificar sus días en el campo de concentración, a la espera de su liberación o del fin de la guerra. Al comandante japonés que dirige el campo, no tiene otro remedio que ceder ante la testarudez de Nicholson, y deja que éste dirija personalmente la construcción del puente. Pero un oficial norteamericano, interpretado por William Holden, no está de acuerdo con la manera que tiene Nicholson de llevar la existencia de sus hombres en el campo. Sus ideas pasan por una resistencia activa, y planea sabotear la construcción. El enfrentamiento entre ambos es inminente, ante la sorpresa del coronel Saito (Sessue Hayakawa).
Una película memorable. Rodada en Malasia, Tailandia y Birmania. Basada en la novela de Pierre Boulle, adaptada por Carl Foreman y Michael Wilson, aunque en los títulos de crédito figura el propio Boulle. Fue un éxito total durante su estreno, y hoy en día está considerada una de las grandes películas de la historia del cine. Un punto de referencia en el cine bélico.
Dirigida con maestría por David Lean, experto en narraciones grandiosas. Muestra la inutilidad de la guerra y la compleja personalidad de los militares durante una situación de conflicto. Las interpretaciones son magníficas, desde la de Alec Guinness, que obtuvo un Oscar, hasta la de Holden o el propio Hayakawa. Ganadora de 8 Oscar. Todo el mundo recuerda la música compuesta para la película por Malcolm Arnold, y la melodía que los soldados silbaban cuando marchaban hacia el trabajo.
Synopsis: The film deals with the situation of British prisoners of war during World War II who are ordered to build a bridge to accommodate the Burma-Siam railway. Their instinct is to sabotage the bridge but, under the leadership of Colonel Nicholson, they are persuaded that the bridge should be constructed as a symbol of British morale, spirit and dignity in adverse circumstances. At first, the prisoners admire Nicholson when he bravely endures torture rather than compromise his principles for the benefit of the Japanese commandant Saito. He is an honorable but arrogant man, who is slowly revealed to be a deluded obsessive. He convinces himself that the bridge is a monument to British character, but actually is a monument to himself, and his insistence on its construction becomes a subtle form of collaboration with the enemy. Unknown to him, the Allies have sent a mission into the jungle, led by Warden and an American, Shears, to blow up the bridge.
