Comentario: Documental de extraordinaria belleza plástica y un marcado tono amargo. Generalmente calificado (de forma oportunista e interesada) como un film "anticomunista", se enmarca mas bien en la línea de films como Las Hurdes (1932) de Luis Buñuel, que denuncian el abandono secular sufrido por algunas comunidades campesinas, pero centrando el marco del análisis en torno a la vejez. Combinando los esquemas del cine etnográfico-social y el cine-encuesta, Hanák nos muestra un triste abanico de personajes ancianos, solos y enfermos, "Juguetes rotos" de una sociedad moderna en la que parecen no tener cabida (que les olvida y margina). Imprescindible y sobrecogedor.Somehow the all-encompassing benefits of the socialist "paradise" of Czechoslovakia bypassed the group of old farmers shown in this 1972 documentary almost entirely, and they are shown bravely coping with dire poverty and privation. A plucky bunch, their bravery makes the fact that they have not received any benefits from the regime even more difficult to stomach. It's surprising that this film was even allowed to be made, but when it was, it was put on the shelf until 1988 when it aired at the Nyon International Film Festival in Switzerland, a festival of documentary films. There, it won top honors (AMG).
