Working mainly in his native Sweden, writing his own scripts and drawing on his innermost feelings, Bergman was unafraid of tacking serious themes and spiritual questions. He became a leading light in the presentation of film unselfconsciously as art. However, only a privileged few have met and talked at length with the man himself.
As well as writing a book for the BFI on The Seventh Seal, novelist and broadcaster Melvyn Bragg interviewed Bergman for The South Bank Show in 1978. Published in 1990, Conversation With Bergman was an extended interview by French film director Olivier Assayas. And in 2003, Bergman talked to Swedish television producer Marie Nyreröd for a series of intimate documentaries.
