Drama
Based on the play by Tennessee Williams: A party is planned for the 65th birthday of family patriarch 'Big Daddy', but not everyone is in a festive mood. Big Daddy's son Brick, a one-time star athlete, has a drinking problem and has become cold towards his wife Maggie, though she still desperately loves him. Brick's older brother Gooper and his wife hope to gain control over Big Daddy's estate. Big Daddy himself is just coming home from a clinic where he has been tested for cancer. When his doctor tells the family the results of the tests, the family's accumulated lies, frustrations, and secrets quickly begin to come out.
CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF is Tennessee Williams' most popular and accessible drama. Even those who haven't seen it know it's the one about the gorgeous woman who cannot coax her husband into bed, while Big Daddy is dying of cancer and the noisy in-laws are running around trying to usurp all his money and land. This 1958 film features a cast from Heaven enlivening some of the best dialogue ever written by an American.
Elizabeth Taylor is unforgettable as Maggie. Many people seem to think that this was her first big dramatic role, though she had already given superior performances in A PLACE IN THE SUN, GIANT and RAINTREE COUNTY. Here she displays a confidence not yet seen in her previous performances. We have probably all witnessed more than one interpretation of Maggie, but I don't see how this one could be improved upon.
Paul Newman is on the proper wavelength as Brick, the man who would rather drink than make love to his wife. Most people seem to have limited sympathy for Brick, at least in the first hour. After all, what red-blooded heterosexual man wouldn't want to be in bed with Elizabeth Taylor? As Brick's secrets are revealed and his own heterosexuality is called into question (not as honestly in the movie as in the original play), Newman turns in a superb piece of acting.
Burl Ives, wearing a goatee (!), is in fine form as Big Daddy, and Judith Anderson manages a touching portrayal of Big Mama. Jack Carson is properly droll and concerned as Gooper, and Madeleine Sherwood is a pure treasure as Sister Woman. Her every line reading and facial expression lie somewhere on the scale between hilarious and absurd, just as they should. I remember reading somewhere that this character was probably Tennessee Williams' caricature of a heterosexual female, and Miss Sherwood is remarkable in bringing it to life.
The movie has been criticized for a certain vagueness in terms of Newman's motivations. In the original play the concept of "spiritual homosexuality" was very blatant; here it is merely suggested. I think it is perfectly in keeping with the times. The movie goes just so far but doesn't exploit the subject. This was, of course, 1958, and CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF was just about to break one taboo and didn't dare attempt another: how many movies had there been prior to this one in which a woman actually begs a man to take her to bed?
Why does Big Daddy favor Brick over Gooper? Is it that Brick is more emotionally needy? Is it that he has more potential than Gooper? I believe there might be a doubt in Big Daddy's mind that first-born son Gooper is really his own. Big Mama seems a bit too desperate and demonstrative in the scene where she recalls fainting the first time Big Daddy kissed her and stresses that she was "four months swole with Gooper" when Big Daddy proposed.
The dialogue is precious. "Mae and Gooper gloat over us bein' childless, even in front of their no-neck monsters," Elizabeth Taylor proclaims in one of the classic scenes in any Williams-based film. Paul Newman has just thrown his crutch at her when they are interrupted by a little girl who asks too many questions and who, after being reprimanded by Miss Taylor, sticks her tongue out and whines, "You're just jealous 'cause you can't have babies!"
Newman and Miss Taylor received Oscar nominations for CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF, his first, her second. I think Newman gave the best male performance of 1958, but in THE LONG, HOT SUMMER. He deserved his nomination here, however. As for Miss Taylor, 1958 was one of the most competitive years in the Best Actress category, with a number of performances worthy of the award: Kim Stanley in THE GODDESS, Rosalind Russell in AUNTIE MAME, and the eventual winner, Susan Hayward in I WANT TO LIVE!
Surprisingly none of the supporting performances were nominated, although Burl Ives (who won for THE BIG COUNTRY in 1958), Carson, Miss Anderson, and especially Miss Sherwood were worthy of potential nominees.
CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF was in production when Elizabeth Taylor lost her husband Mike Todd. Even though she looks no less than gorgeous throughout, she was without doubt distraught and disinclined to take nourishment. Legend has it that Richard Brooks kept demanding re-takes of the dinner scene in which the kids are singing the "Sunbeam" song, so that Miss Taylor would have to eat. Notice the look of concern on the faces of some of her co-stars.
