A retrospective of Nobuhiko Obayashi

Del autor de la extraordinaria Hausu nos llega una colección desde Karagarga, con gran parte de sus trabajos experimentales realizados en la decada de los 60. Os puedo asegurar que pocas cosas transmiten tanto visualmente como estos cortos. A mi me han impactado contundentemente. Desprenden melancolía, a ratos humor, a veces no se sabe qué, o no se puede explicar, se ha de sentir la experiencia cinematográfica sin tratar de encasillar ni analizar. Bueno, se puede ser analítico, pero guardad la primera visión para el mero disfrute, para empaparos de todo sin juzgar demasiado, sintiendo las imágenes, el poder de lo desconocido.

No tienen diálogos o son inglés y japonés, de vez en cuando con rótulos, pero ni caso, son un mero accidente en el torrente desbordante de narrativa puramente visual.

Perhaps the most conventional narrative on the collection, about a man who reminisces about a girl in his past (played by Obayashi's soon-to-be wife Kyoko). Although it's a silent film, it relies a bit too much on title cards to tell the story and would benefit from subtitles.

A young couple go on a picnic in the forest, where the woman reveals that she is pregnant. This film contains a certain stylistic effect that I used to think was first used by Tarkovsky (and was later re-used by Obayashi in House), but this film predates Tarkovsky's usage.

My favorite film on the collection and one of the most delightful films I've ever seen. An homage to Roger Vadim's Et Mourir de Plaisir aka Blood and Roses. A girl named Emi is tired of her simple life in a seaside village and travels to the city where she befriends a girl named Sari and falls in love with a man who turns out to be a vampire. There's a little bit of dialogue in this, but fortunately there's also an English narration, appropriately provided by Donald Richie himself.

This is probably a forgotten masterpiece of Japanese underground cinema, though I think I'd need subtitles to know for sure. It seems to be a very personal and autobiographical film for Obayashi. There isn't much dialogue, but subtitles would be necessary to fully understand the story. Much of the film's running time consists of creatively edited montages of the young main characters having fun, high on life, wreaking havoc 1968-style in the town of Onomichi.

Buenas, vengo de Allzine, porque alli nadie tiene los ripeos a mano, haber si aqui hay suerte. De los cortos experimentales de Obayashi se me han bajado ya 4 pero me faltan 6 de ellos que están por la mitad o casi completos pero no avanzan nada, además de otro del que no se ha bajado nada de nada:
