IMDb 8.2/10
Directed and written by Wim Wenders
Rüdiger Vogler .... Bruno Winter
Hanns Zischler .... Robert Lander
Lisa Kreuzer .... Pauline, cashier
Rudolf Schündler .... Robert's Father
Marquard Bohm .... Man Who Lost His Wife
Two thirty-something men, both damaged by their relationships with women, meet up and begin a tentative friendship when Robert drives his Beetle into the river Elbe.
Bruno, a cinema mechanic, tours the isolated villages along the hinterland of the East German border. Robert, a paediatrician, has abandoned his wife in Italy and is heading home to confront his father. Travelling in Bruno's battered old furniture van, listening to American music and talking about nothing very much, they confront the demons from their pasts and the bitter truths about who they are.
Wim Wenders' emotional road movie is principally an exploration of men's loneliness, both with and without women, but it has many themes and subtexts, such as the passing of small-town movie houses and the desolation caused by division (east/west, man/woman, father/son, past/present, Europe/America, life/death, child/adult).
This is brilliant, beautiful, unforgettable cinema; surely the greatest German film ever made.Im.Lauf.der.Zeit.(Wim.Wenders.1976.DVD.german.xvid).avi
