The source from which all modern musicals flow: An ailing Broadway director returns to produce one final show, but his leading lady is injured and must be replaced by a novice. Call it dated, but it's aged to perfection, and the final twenty minute sequence will leave you tapping your toes, with a smile on your face and a song in your heart. Movies--never mind musicals--just don't get any better than this.
If only there could have been more musical and dance numbers! All of them (not counting practices) occur at the very end of the film, and there are only three of them there. Luckily, the non-musical parts were really good, too. The plot was just a pretty standard behind-the-scenes of a play movie. It actually reminded me a lot of two films about plays that I have just seen recently, Micheal Powell's _The Red Shoes_ and Tim Robbins' _Cradle Will Rock_. While the plot may be a bit common, the dialogue is exceptionally good. It is snappy and witty and clever at all times. Also, the ensemble cast was extremely good. I love Dick Powell. He's not in this film too much, but he's perfect in every scene he's in. I was first introduced to him in the guise of Phillip Marlowe (and I am among the small group of people who consider him the best incarnation of Phillip Marlowe), and he's just as great in the genre which brought him his fame.
This is also the first movie that I've ever seen involving Bubsy Berkely, and I have to say, WOW!!! Those musical sequences are ingenious! One thing I find funny, though, is that, if you think about it, the audience who would be watching the play from below wouldn't be able to see any of the fancy designs the dancers make with their legs! Too bad for them!

You're Getting to Be a Habit With Me -- 00:25:11 --> 00:26:07
Ev'ry kiss, every hug
Seems to act just like a drug;
You're getting to be a habit with me.

Let me stay in your arms,
I'm addicted to your charms;
You're getting to be a habit with me.

I used to think our love was something that I
Could take or leave alone,
But now I couldn't do without my supply,
I need you for my own.

Oh, I can't break away,
I must have you ev'ry day;
As regularly as coffee or tea.
You've got me in your clutches,
And I can't get free;
You're getting to be a habit with me.

Can't break it,
You're getting to be a habit with me.

You're Getting to Be a Habit With Me -- 00:40:56 --> 00:43:17
I don't know exactly how it started,
But it started in fun;
I just wanted someone to be gay with,
Just to play with someone.
But now I realize that I should never let him go,
And I'm going to tell him so.

Ev'ry kiss, every hug
Seems to act just like a drug;
You're getting to be a habit with me.

Let me stay in your arms,
I'm addicted to your charms;
You're getting to be a habit with me.

I used to think our love was something that I
Could take or leave alone,
But now I couldn't do without my supply,
I need you for my own.

Oh, I can't break away,
I must have you ev'ry day;
As regularly as coffee or tea.
You've got me in your clutches,
You're getting to be a habit with me.

Can't break it,
You're getting to be a habit with me.

You're getting to be a habit with me.

Can't break it,
You're getting to be a habit with me.

42nd Street -- 01:02:21 --> 01:02:37
Come and meet those dancing feet,
On the avenue I'm taking you to,
Forty-Second Street.
Hear the beat of dancing feet,
It's the song I love the melody of,
Forty-Second Street.

42nd Street -- 01:02:53 --> 01:03:00
Come and meet those dancing feet,
On the avenue I'm taking you to,
Forty-Second Street.

Shuffle Off to Buffalo -- 01:09:44 --> 01:14:08
Now that we have had the rice and flowers,
The knot is tied;

I can visu'lize such happy hours,
Right by your side.
The honeymoon in store
Is one that you'll adore,
I'm gonna take you for a ride.

I'll go home and pack my panties,
You go home and get your scanties,
And away we'll go.
Mm mm mm...
Off we're gonna shuffle,
Shuffle off to Buffalo.

To Niag'ra in a sleeper,
There's no honeymo on that's cheaper,
And the train goes slow.
Ooh ooh ooh!
Off, we're gonna shuffle,
Shuffle off to Buffalo.

Someday, I hope we'll be elected
To buy a lot of baby clothes;
We don't know when to expect it
But it's a cinch that Wintell knows!

For a little silver quarter,
We can have the pull man porter
Turn the lights down low.
Ooh!
Off we're gonna shuffle,
Shuffle off to Buffalo.

Suffle off, shuffle off, shuffle off,
Suffle off, shuffle off to Buffalo.

Ooh!

Ohh!

Matrimony is baloney
She'll be wanting alimony
In a year of so...
Still they go and shuffle
Shuffle Off to Buffalo.

When she knows as much as we know
She'll be on her way to Reno
While he still has dough
She'll give him the Shuffle
When they're back from Buffalo.

I'll bet that she's the farmer daughter
And he's that well-known travelling-man;
He once stopped down
at the farm-house,
That's how the whole affaire began!

He did right for little Nelly
With a shotgun at his bell... tummy,
How could he say "no"?
He just had to shuffle,
shuffle off to Buffalo.

You'll go home and get your purses,
I'll go get my niece and nurses,
And away we'll go.
Mm mm mm...
Off we're gonna shuffle,
Shuffle off to Buffalo.

You'll go home and pack your panties,
I'll go home and get my scanties,
And away we'll go.
Mm mm mm...
Off we're gonna shuffle,
Shuffle off to Buffalo.

Shuffle off to Buffalo.

To Niag'ra in a sleeper,
There's no honeymo on that's cheaper,
And the train goes slow.
Ooh ooh ooh!
Off, we're gonna shuffle,
Shuffle off to Buffalo.

Someday, I hope we'll be elected
To buy a lot of baby clothes;
We don't know when to expect it
But it's a cinch that Wintell knows!

For a little silver quarter,
We can have the pull man porter
Turn the lights down low.
Ooh!
Off we're gonna shuffle,
Shuffle off to Buffalo.

Suffle off, shuffle off, shuffle off,
Suffle off, shuffle off to Buffalo.

Young and Healthy -- 01:14:45 --> 01:18:35
Say, I know a bundle of humanity,
She's about so high;
I'm nearly driven to insanity,
When she passes by.
She's a snootie little cutie,
She's been so hard to kiss;
I'll try to overcome her vanity,
And then I'll tell her this:

I'm young and healthy,
And you've got charms;
It would really be a sin
Not to have you in my arms.
I'm young and healthy,
And so are you;
When the moon is in the sky
Tell me what am I to do?

Say, If I could hate you
I'd keep away;
But that ain't my nature,
I'm full of vitamin "A," say!

I'm young and healthy,
So let's be bold;
In a year or two or three,
Maybe we will be
Too old.

I'm young and healthy,
And you've got charms;
It would really be a sin
Not to have you in my arms.
I'm young and healthy,
And so are you;
When the moon is in the sky
Tell me what am I to do?

If I could hate you
I'd keep away;
But that ain't my nature,
I'm full of vitamin "A," say!

I'm young and healthy,
So let's be bold;
In a year or two or three,
Maybe we will be

It would really be a sin
Not to have you in my arms.
I'm young and healthy,
And so are you;
When the moon is in the sky
Tell me what am I to do?

If I could hate you honey
I'd keep away;
But that ain't my nature,
I'm full of vitamin "A!

Ooh! I'm young and healthy,
So let's be bold;
In a year or two or three,

42nd Street -- 01:18:59 --> 01:24:31
In the heart of little old New York,
You'll find a thoroughfare.
It's the part of little old New York
That runs into Times Square.
A crazy quilt that "Wall Street Jack" built,
If you've got a little time to spare,
I'd like to take you there.

Come and meet those dancing feet,
On the avenue I'm taking you to,
Forty-Second Street.
Hear the beat of dancing feet,
It's the song I love the melody of,
Forty-Second Street.

Little "nifties" from the Fifties,
Innocent and sweet;
Sexy ladies from the Eighties,
Who are indiscreet.

Ooh, side by side, they're glorified
Where the underworld can meet the elite,
Forty-Second Street.

Little "nifties" from the Fifties,
Innocent and sweet;
Sexy ladies from the Eighties,
Who are indiscreet.

They're side by side, they're glorified
Where the underworld can meet the elite,
Naughty, bawdy, gaudy, sporty,
Forty-Second Street!

The big parade goes on for years,
It's the rhapsody of love and tears,
Naughty, bawdy, gaudy, sporty,
Forty-Second Street!

Come and meet those dancing feet,
On the avenue I'm taking you to,
Forty-Second Street.
Hear the beat of dancing feet,
It's the song I love the melody of,
