NOTE: This IS a DVD rip (mine) from a bargain basement issue.
Picture quality is acceptable, and sourced from a print that had suffered some shrinkage, also showing a slightly higher contrast ratio than is normal. Seems to have been mastered from 16mm (size of changeover cues gives this one away) onto NTSC tape, some tape glitches here and there. Bear in mind it was shot in 1930 it displays a lot of the technical limitations of the time, especially the shortcomings of the sound track.
I can’t find another copy issued on DVD, this one is all there is, to my knowledge. Anyway, it’s immensely enjoyable, and will have to do until a restored version comes along. See screenshots.

"Un gran reportaje" es la primera de las cuatros adaptaciones cinematográficas que se han hecho de la obra de teatro de Ben Hecht y Charles MacArthur "The Front Page". A esta primera dirigida por Lewis Milestone, seguirían Luna nueva ("His Girl Friday") de Howard Hawks, con Cary Grant y Rosalind Russell en 1940; en 1974 Primera plana, de Billy Wilder, magistralmente interpretada por Jack Lemmon y Walter Matthau, y una cuarta escasamente destacable, "Switching Channels" (Interferencias, 1988).
Hecht y MacArthur sabían de lo que hablaban al escribir esta obra, ya que ambos comenzaron como periodistas en Chicago en los años 20.
Olvidada hoy día esta primera versión, sí fue relevante en su día. George O´Brien tituló su autobiografía ""Thank You, Alexander Graham Bell", en relación a la llamada de Howard Hughes ofreciendole el papel de Hildy Johnson, que le permitió cimentarse una sólida carrera en Hollywood durante medio siglo.
Habría que revisionar todas las versiones para poder compararlas entre sí, y en mi opinión si hay un personaje que destaque en ésta por encima de los demás, ese es sin duda Adolphe Menjou .
