Los personajes principales son: Yelena, su segunda y joven esposa; Sonya, hija de su primer matrimonio; la abuela de Sonia y suegra del profesor, y el tío Vania, que cada vez soporta peor la actitud de superioridad de su cuñado. El texto original y las relaciones entre los intérpretes se enredarán inevitablemente conforme avancen los ensayos.

One way of describing Louis Malle's extraordinary Vanya on 42nd Street (1994), which Criterion has just released on regular and Blu-ray DVD in a sparkling newly remastered print, is to say that it depicts theater director Andre Gregory's workshop of Anton Chekhov's Uncle Vanya. But it is neither a documentary nor is it filmed theater. It's not even in the traditional sense of the word a movie. Vanya on 42nd Street is more like an inspired laboratory where a number of actors plus their director delve into the play by peeling away all of its acclaim, its reputation and various interpretations, plus its legendary hold on modern theater, in order to get to the very root of its tragic realism, to reveal what it is that makes this seminal work last. As if he were setting out to rediscover an old forgotten language, Andre Gregory takes his cast through Vanya for the sheer pleasure of the text; to find out just what this text reveals to the actors about the characters they inhabit. "What Chekhov is about fundamentally is the nature of the quality of [the] passing [of] your life, of what it feels like to be here as we travel across the ocean of life," is how Gregory explains the making of Vanya in the DVD's documentary Like Life. If so, he started with the right play where its tone and substance, the very essence of contemplation, transcends its plot.
The story of its creation is unheard of and fascinating. For over three years beginning in 1989, Gregory, along with Wallace Shawn, Julianne Moore, Larry Pine, Brooke Smith, Phoebe Brand and George Gaynes, met voluntarily in a series of performance workshops in the abandoned Victory Theater on 42nd Street in New York City. Since there was never any intention of mounting a production of the play, they felt no need to perform in costume. Instead they wore their street clothes and used modern props while subtly slipping into character, into a time and place that seems far from the stage itself. Given that the actors were also free from the demands of developing a commercial work, they could immerse themselves completely and fearlessly into David Mamet's marvelous American adaptation of Vanya to enter a place of the imagination. And this is where Louis Malle's film comes in.

La magistral obra de teatro del ruso Anton Chejov Tío Vania nació en l895, y hoy reaparece con el vigor de lo nuevo y permanente, privativo de lo clásico. El guionista David Mamet la ha leído como un clásico y traducido como tal, liberándola de localismos y de inevitables presencias del XIX. El director teatral, André Gregory, formado junto al polaco Grotowski, llevó a escena en un teatro abandonado de la calle 42 neoyorkina esta experiencia teatral sin vestuario ni decorados, en la pura desnudez de la palabra intemporal, con unos actores que no actúan, viven; los espectadores, a propósito siempre muy pocos, son situados junto a los personajes, en su casa. El director francés Louis Malle, espectador invitado a esta minoritaria experiencia, iniciada en 1991, fascinado por ese Vania tan actual y veraz, lo filma con una rara maestría, acorde hasta la perfecta unidad con Chejov, Gregory, sus actores y todo su equipo.
Las cámaras de cine han conseguido hacer las veces de un espectador que hubiera podido levantarse de su butaca y, como si no existiera la cuarta pared, entrar en la pantalla y convivir con los personajes, a veces mirándoles de lejos, o sentándose a su lado, acercándose a un rostro hasta oír bien qué susurra, o mirar a los ojos la reacción de un personaje ante las palabras de otro, el color, la música, los ruidos... Planos-secuencia casi inadvertidos, medios, primeros y primerísimos planos, contraplanos...: las cámaras viven intensamente Tío Vania, con sencillez, con espontaneidad conseguida, prendidas en la historia, que hacen suya: la universal obra de Anton Chejov renace hoy como si fuera un estreno.

Nota importante [Actualización del post: Enero 2016]
Para los que no hayan seguido el hilo desde el principio, resumo:El archivo publicado en primer lugar (año 2012), estaba multiplexado con la opción "Headder Stripping" que da problemas en el reproductor WD TV. Además se me había olvidado incluir dentro del contenedor matroska los subtítulos en español.
Como se había quedado sin fuentes, paso a compartir, 4 años después (9 - 01- 2016), el mismo ripeo pero sin el Header Stripping ("Compresión de Cabeceras") y con los subs en español dentro del matroska.
Para los que tengan el antiguo ripeo, el de 2012, no es necesario bajarse de nuevo este ripeo. De entrada, no se trata de un nuevo ripeo sino un nuevo multiplexado . Los problemas de "Compresión de cabecera" (en caso de que se disponga de un WD TV) se pueden solucionar fácilmente como se explica aquí:
