Buffalo 66 narra la historia de una venganza que progresivamente se transforma en una truncada historia de amor. Billy sale de la carcel. sale dispuesto a acabar con la vida del jugador de futbol que lo hizo perder todo su dinero con esa jugada arreglada. Layla sale de la nada, es una fantasmita amigable de ojos grandes y brillantes que se interpone entre Billy y su mirada amarga, su ira incontenible ?incomprensible?, su frustración y su búsqueda urgente de un baño para orinar. El encuentro será providencial. Layla proveerá a Billy con justo lo que él necesita tras tantos años de ser ignorado y despreciado: un poco de atención, una sonrisa, un abrazo en la cama para antes de dormir. Billy huirá aterrado de su dulzura en búsqueda de su añorada venganza prometiendo regresar.Antes de cumplir con su cometido, Billy visitará a sus padres, los enfrentará. El viaje de Billy, corto, es un viaje de cierre. Por éso, junto a Layla, Billy recorrerá su vida insignificante, su orgullo de ser el campeón de la liga local de bolos. Billy Brown es un joven recién salido de prisión que comienza su nueva vida con dos metas en su cabeza: Cumplir su venganza con el tipo que le encerró, y por otro lado, regresar de nuevo al hogar a ver a sus padres, a los que ha dicho que tiene un trabajo prometedor y está casado con una guapa mujer. Para aparentar esto último, Billy decide secuestrar a Layla, una joven solitaria, a la que convence para que represente el papel de esposa delante de sus padres.

Vincent Gallo (Cord) dirige, escribe, pone la música y protagoniza esta película independiente de dos jóvenes errantes sin un rumbo claro en sus vidas. Contada de una manera particular, algunos dicen que influido por la "nouvelle vague", la historia nos adentra en las andanzas de una pareja atípica que el destino une. Una chica perdida y un joven aún más desubicado, que insiste en reunirse con unos padres estrambóticos que ni siquiera se han preocupado por él. Quizá el cariño mutuo es lo único que les quede.
En la piel de Layla se pone Christina Ricci, actriz que, gustos aparte, desborda en la cinta gran ternura. Cuenta entre los secundarios con la veteranía de Anjelica Huston (El honor de los Prizzi) y el duro Mickey Rourke (El juramento). (DeCine21)

AMG SYNOPSIS: Actor Vincent Gallo (The Funeral, Palookaville) made his feature directorial debut with this drama about convict Billy Brown (Gallo), released after half a decade spent behind bars. Drifting into downtown Buffalo, Billy kidnaps teen Layla (Christina Ricci) and has her pose as his loving wife when he visits his parents (Ben Gazzara and Anjelica Huston). Layla praises him and goes along with his fanciful tale that they met at CIA headquarters, where they both worked. Mom and dad not only fall for this, they are entranced by Layla, who soon begins to embellish her act. When she claims to be pregnant by Billy, he hustles her out to a bowling alley and on to a restaurant, where they run into trampy Wendy (Rosanna Arquette), who might be Billy's former girlfriend. AMG REVIEW: Already drunk on the notion of self-indulgence, actor Vincent Gallo's debut as a writer and director will likely prove a love-it-or-hate-it affair for most viewers, with the hates outnumbering the loves. Dominating the screen in a flurry of aggressive method acting, Gallo makes no attempt to make his hateful loser of a protagonist the least bit sympathetic, a choice far easier to admire than to endure. In a film about redemption, it might not be asking too much for viewers to have a stake in the process. Visually, Gallo presents an abundance of ideas, most transparently copped from John Cassavetes and the French New Wave. The problem isn't a reliance on past masters -- what directors of the past 40 years haven't borrowed from Cassavetes and the New Wave? -- but an inability to synthesize the ideas into a cohesive whole. Strange asides and odd visual flourishes seem to take place solely because they can without any regard for the overall piece. Every flash of talent the film displays tends to get undermined by Gallo's lack of discipline, his work occasionally resembling a student film that happens to feature some name actors. All of these hold up their end admirably: Christina Ricci in particular delivers a performance that almost makes it possible to overlook the fact that her character is a transparent fantasy figure. Those who tap into the enthusiasm that clearly drives Gallo might be able to overlook such flaws, but for most, Buffalo '66 will likely prove an off-putting exercise in showy tedium. -- Keith Phipps

Parece que se ha utilizado un DVD PAL, y en principio los datos técnicos del ripeo son correctos. Con el xvid ya sabemos que se pierde respecto a la fuente pero en fin te dejo unas capturas del DVD NTSC de la zona 1, anamórfico y ya decides tú mismo. Desconozco si el PAL ha partido del mismo master que el NTSC aunque parece que tiene peor calidad a la vista de esas capturas.

Vincent Gallo y Lance Acord utilizaron una técnica fotográfica denominada "reversal stock", rodada con película para diapositivas Ektachrome.

VERY few 35mm features have been shot in color reversal. "Buffalo 66" is the most famous example, shot on the old VNF Ektachrome stocks of the 1970's (just obsoleted this year by Kodak) and processed normally into a positive image, thus requiring an optically-printed dupe negative to be made (contact printing the IN would have put the emulsion on the "wrong" side.)

Employing picture-in-picture flashbacks, subjective cameras, and an optically shocking, pioneering technique of pivoting around within a freeze-frame, "Buffalo '66" has an edgy, experimental air to it without feeling gimmicky. But as distinct as Gallo's style is -- the whole picture has a slightly grainy, over-developed look to it -- his visual stunts are used mostly to pry inside Billy's head, aiding the film's emotionally profundity instead of distracting from it.

The anamorphic widescreen presentation exhibits slightly faded colors with solid blacks as well as some solid film grain. The film was shot on reversal stock which looks great here and is the reason for the slightly unnatural colors. At times the transfer is very sharp, but not consistently so. This is most definitely a result of the original filming methods.

Creo que la película no se ha editado aún en BluRay, pero hay varios ripeos HDTV.
