Sinopsis: Don Rafael Costa, embajador de Miranda, y el matrimonio Thévenot están invitados a cenar en casa del matrimonio Sénechal, pero a causa de un malentendido tienen que ir a un restaurante. Cuando llegan, no pueden cenar porque el dueño del lugar ha muerto. A partir de ese momento, las reuniones de este selecto grupo de burgueses se verán siempre interrumpidas por las circunstancias más extrañas, algunas reales y otras fruto de su imaginación. Rafael Costa, embajador de Miranda y el matrimonio Thévenot han sido invitados a cenar en casa del matrimonio Sénechal. Pero allí se han olvidado de que iban a ir, por lo que se impone un cambio de planes... Acuden a un restaurante, pero una vez allí, se enteran de que no podrán cenar porque el dueño del restaurante ha muerto.
A partir de un esquema sencillo -un grupo de amigos intenta cenar juntos sin llegar a conseguirlo por razones variopintas- Buñuel lanza cierta crítica a las costumbres de la clase burguesa. Sin embargo, es su film más amable, suavizado por los constantes recursos al humor, lo que explica que fuera uno de los grandes éxitos del director. Es necesario aclarar que no se trata tampoco de un film hilarante, como prometía la publicidad. "El cartel es una boca enorme pintada sobre unas piernas, bajo un sombrero hongo. Yo hubiera fusilado al publicista", aclara Buñuel.
El film ganó el Oscar a la mejor película extranjera, en 1972. Fue la primera vez que un español obtenía tan preciada estatuilla, pero la película era francesa (

Les Thévenot viennent dîner chez les Sénéchal. Surprise : le repas était prévu pour le lendemain. Thévenot invite tout le monde dans une auberge transformée en salle mortuaire. Buñuel applies his surrealist touch to a mundane event: a dinner party that may never come to pass. A group of well-to-do friends attempt to gather for a social evening, but are thwarted at every turn. The initial problem seems to be a simple scheduling mistake, but the obstacles become more and more bizarre. At one point, the guests are interrupted at the table by an army on maneuvers. Later they learn that they are merely characters in a stage play and so cannot have dinner together. These misadventures are combined with symbolic dreams of the various characters, some of which also involve interrupted dinners. Wicked social satire and one of Buñuel's funniest films. AMG REVIEW: In this surrealist satire reminiscent of his earlier L'Age d'Or (1930) and The Exterminating Angel (1962), Luis Buñuel leavens his attack on class privilege with light comedy. With a narrative that interweaves flashbacks within dreams within a dream, Buñuel interrogates the absurdities of bourgeois ceremony and hypocrisy, as two well-heeled couples and their two friends, including a drug-running South American ambassador, can't conduct a dinner party in peace. Foiled by (among other things) botched scheduling, sexual desire, a theater audience, an untimely funeral, and armed revolutionaries, the sextet's inability to eat increasingly suggests a manifestation of their innermost fears, while Buñuel's repeated interruptions of the story cheekily defy movie conventions and straightforward interpretations. Eschewing both a musical score and anything resembling closure, Buñuel renders the film as unsettling as it is funny, as the bourgeoisie soldier on towards a meal they never have.
