Todo empieza cuando Jim Hasley recoge con su cadillac a un autoestopista, John Ryder, en una carretera de Texas. Cuando John le confiesa a Jim que es un asesino y que espera que le recojan y le lleven para matar, Jim lo deja en la cuneta y sigue adelante, pensando que se ha quedado atrás. A partir de este momento, los dos empiezan a jugar al gato y al ratón. El asesino sigue matando y dejando pistas que inculpan al joven Jim de los asesinatos.
