IMDB

AÑO: 1967
NACIONALIDAD: USA
GÉNERO: Drama
DIRECTOR: Jim McBride
PRODUCTOR: Jim McBride
GUIONISTA: Mike BInder
MÚSICA: Miles Goodman
FOTOGRAFÍA: Michael Wadleigh
REPARTO: L.m. Kit Carson, Eileen Dietz, Lorenzo Mans, Louise Levine, Fern Mcbride, Michel Lévine, Bob Lesser, Jack Baran .
Excerpts from promo fluff on box:

Shot in 1967, David Holzman's Diary is a milestone in contemporary film history. Brilliantly conceived and executed, it manages to simultaneously be very much of its time and very many years ahead of its time.

The film tells the story of David Holzman, a young man infatuated with film and filmmaking. Newly unemployed and beset with doubts and worries, Holzman thinks that filming his everyday existence will 'bring life into focus'. Staged to seem like a documentary of a real person's life, Holzman's filming of his life starts to take over his life.

Arguably the first 'mockumentary', it has been little seen but hugely influential over the years. The film is also enormously prescient about our current times, when seemingly everyone records everything to do with their lives for the camera.

excerpts from critic Jonathan Rosenbaum's essay (included in full within the torrent):

One of the first and best of the great pseudo-documentaries, and certainly one of the cleverest to be made in the 60's after Peter Watkins' Culloden and The War Game.

Playing with the form of cinema-verite while subverting much of the content by making extended portions of it fictional, McBride was emulating the practice of his French models, filming his theory rather than just writing about it. Of course, a good bit of the film is documentary, especially when the camera is roaming around Manhattan in the west '70s. And even when the narrative premises and performances are fictional, the film qualifies as documentary in quite another way - by bearing witness to the mood, preoccupations and lifestyles of its own epoch.

Sorry, I don't have much time for doing that so you can add any details about the film if you want. But rip comes from VHS source. Its DVD will be out on January. Enjoy and Merry Christmas!

The great-granddaddy of all fictumentaries, David Holzman’s Diary is done so straight and so realistically that some video stores keep it in their documentary sections. Unfortunately, the skill with which it was created is also its undoing. For those who are unaware that the film is fiction, it plays as 74 minutes of documentary footage of the young, irrationally exuberant, and terminally dull David Holzman’s life. Even for those who are in on the joke, it is difficult to truly enjoy watching the pathetic Holzman’s struggles.

As its name implies, the film is fashioned as if David is keeping a film diary of his life. In the late 60s, when the film was shot, this was possible because light, portable sound equipment had been invented only a few years before. And the one-man, double-system setup that David employs on his occasional expeditions into New York City was impossible before this new technology was developed. So, like any good satire, the film is a product of the time in which it was created. Slyly lampooning the pretentious and insufferable nature of some of the work that had come out of this new, more intimate class of cinema, David Holzman’s Diary has a message that everyone should take to heart: your life might not really be that interesting.

David has decided that he will film whenever he can, and that includes filming his beautiful girlfriend who (naturally) is uncomfortable with the constant presence of the camera. When David films her one time too many (and in a rather intimate manner) she storms out, never to be seen again. So David is left by himself to give monologues to the camera or to stalk girls on the subway. Sometimes this is very funny, such as his obsession with the girl across the street, but as a whole it is so dry that it nearly becomes the very thing it is making fun of.

Where Holzman succeeds the most is its ability to convey David’s infatuation with film and filmmaking. In his opening monologue, David tells us that “noted French wit Jean-Luc Godard called film ‘truth at 24 frames per second.’” David really believes in this, and it is an especially clever way to begin a 74 minute lie. There is a certain intoxicating naiveté to filmmakers with such an unabashed belief in the truth-telling properties of film. And David’s glee as he walks through the city holding his camera over his head, to show off his new fish-eye lens attachment, is appealing. And perhaps the best scene in the film is a single extended shot of David’s friend Pepe tells David what the audience already knows; film is a complete disaster and was a terrible idea to begin with.

Released one year before Take The Money and Run, David Holzman’s Diary is probably the first fictumentary, not counting Buñuel’s pseudo-documentary Land Without Bread (1932). It has never enjoyed huge success, but because it was such a groundbreaking film it was inducted into the National Film Registry in 1991.

Comentario.
