"Tianlun" is the earliest Fei Mu's film you can find in the world, you know Fei Mu is the greatest chinese film poet ever, far better than Zhang yimou, Chen kaige, Wang xiaoshuai...and more, he made nearly 40 movies between 1930s-50s, but only 5 of them were survived, "Spring in a Small Town", "Happiness Neither in Life Nor in Death", "Song of China", "The Wolf Hill" and a short film "Nightmares in Spring Chamber". Although his "Spring in a Small Town" is recognized his highest artistic work, but I think "Song of China" is not only as good as SIAST but also far rarer than it. "Song of China" is the only silent film of Fei Mu, considered the best chinese silent film ever. it's the first chinese film to be distributed in the U.S., showed in public at L.A. in 1936, but lost nearly half a century, and then its 46 min fragmentary footage was found at BFI in 80s. It's a truly remarkable chinese film, and in this film you will see a young film talent, his concise and beautiful cinematography, his graceful montage. A unique film indeed.
Leading role is Lin Chuchu, born in Vancouver, Canada, married to Li Minwei, the father of Hongkong film, she's one of the famous silent filmstar att.
Song of China (Tianlun) 1935
One of the few Chinese silent films to be distributed in the U.S. in the 1930s, Song of China is a multigenerational drama about one family's attempt to regain traditional values after an encounter with modernity. A family patriarch moves his dissolute adult children back to the countryside, vainly hoping they will change their ways. Co-directed by Lianhua Studios head Luo Mingyou and the young Fei Mu (director of the post-War classic Spring in a Small Town), this film grapples with the struggle between traditional family values and the need to embrace change and, in the words of the film's patriarch, "Go beyond personal love and extend love to all mankind."
