SINOPSIS
Parodia muy divertida de los 3 Mosqueteros de Alejandro Dumas, donde Linder se pasa multiplicando a su gusto los anacronismos.
[quote]In his last great film, the French comedian - already then a veteran - makes the audience laugh once again with his brilliant gags, so much dependent on the situations. This time, he shows us a new type of Max Linder - Max as Douglas Fairbanks, parodied from his masterpiece THE THREE MUSKETEERS. Max's parody of the sex symbol is remarkable good (or excellent), with the same smile, the same type of heroic, and the same charm.
Linder decided this as his best film ever. And with good reasons. Even if it is not at all typical for him, it includes some of his cleverest and funniest gags. I have to allow that I only have seen thirty of the fifty-eight minutes, but if the rest is just as good as what I have seen, THE THREE MUST-GET-There's is well deserved a comfortable place on Max Linder's "Top 10"-list.
But if you want to see this movie (which I would recommend everyone to do), please notice this. A first thing is, you must have seen some of Fairbanks films to understand the humor. Fairbanks was a very gifted actor and artist, but his exaggerated courage can sometimes look a bit silly. This is what Linder mainly makes fun of. You don't have to see the film this one parodies - I saw this before the original and I enjoyed it anyway. But you certainly have to understand Faribanks style.
Another thing is that the film's condition is not very good. I would guess it is possible to restore it today, but it would not be easy.
However, bad condition or not, the film is very funny and highly recommended to every silent film fan and people who wants to perceive what good sense of humor is. Especially one gag is remembered on my mind. Linder is surrounded by a couple of bandits, all of them are well equipped with chords. Can Max run away from this situation? No, of course he can't. But he don't have to run either. When the bandits pierces the chords against him, he jumps down - and the bandits pierces each others instead.
THE THREE MUST-GET-There's is also well worth to see by historical reasons. This was Max Linder's last feature, last film made in Hollywood, and - as I opened this review with - last great film. In contrast to the earlier features he had made, this became a great success, especially in New York. Douglas Fairbanks even sent Linder a telegram, "Your movie is a big success in New York. Enthusiastic critics. Congratulations. Sincerely, Douglas Fairbanks."
After this movie, Linder returned to his home country France, where he made some few shorts before he took his life in a suicide pact with his young wife, he was forty-two, she was twenty. His legend lives on.
