Sinopsis: Philip Marlowe, detective privado de Los Ángeles, recibe la visita del ex convicto ?Moose? Malloy para contratarle para encontrar a su ex novia Velma. Tan solo recibe una fotografía para empezar a buscarla cuando recibe otro encargo, pero nada más llegara la cita, Marlowe queda inconsciente y cuando despierta ve amarrito yaciendo muerto a su lado. Todo se complicará aún más cuando Malloy le diga que la fotografía que tiene no es de muertes y otros sucesos conducirán a Marlowe a comisaría acusado de un crimen que él no ha cometido, pero que todas las pistas conducen hacia él.
