Por si a alguien se la he pasado por alto, Gilliam puso un DVDrip con la versión más aproximada a lo que hubiera querido hacer Williams en Cine-clásico:

Supongo que bastantes de vosotros conoceréis o habréis visto alguna versión anterior de esta película ya que existe un ripeo gracias a citovel en este hilo (el propio citovel cuenta la historia del proyecto aquí). Pues bien, después de todos las versiones que existen de esta película, todas ellas bastante hórridas, que mutilaron y destrozaron sin piedad el proyecto original de Williams (llegando incluso a intercalar canciones en una versión de Disney), aparece este nuevo montaje que trata de rehacer mediante todo el material que hay disponible el proyecto que tenía en mente su director.

El resultado es la aproximación más cercana que existe a la idea original. El ochenta por ciento de las imágenes de la película son de buena calidad y en widescreen, mientras que el resto, aproximadamente un cuarto de hora, procede de bootlegs, bocetos y material de trabajo del equipo de animadores. La animación es esplendorosa y hay unas cuantas escenas que son de auténtica antología de la animación, así que yo no me lo perdería por nada del mundo. No hay subtítulos, pero siendo una historia tan sencilla no creo que haya problemas de comprensión (por si acaso copipego más abajo una sinopsis del propio citovel).

El ripeo está en xvid, con la pista de audio en inglés en ac3 más dos pistas de comentarios del autor del nuevo montaje en mp3 (la segunda pista de comentarios sólo dura ocho minutos). Sin QPEL ni GMC.

El califato de bagdad está en peligro debido al malvado unojo, que con su gran máquina de guerra amenaza avanza hacia allí. No pasaría nada si no fuera porque el gran visir zig-zag, que desea poseer a la princesa yum-yum (que hace honor a su nombre), traiciona al califa. Menos mal que está el humilde zapatero clavo y el ladrón, que no tiene nombre pero es lo mejor de la película.


Designed in the '60s, this Arabian Nights fantasy uses expressive animation to detail the story of a shy, near-silent cobbler who tries to win the affections of a distant princess. Meanwhile, the entertainingly evil, rhyme-speaking Grand Vizier Zig-zag tries to win the Princess's hand, and wages war on the peaceful Golden City. It's up to a rather odd, unspeaking local thief to set things right by accident.


Acclaimed master animator Richard Williams spent the better part of three decades working on what was to be his masterpiece, The Thief and the Cobbler.

After his stunning success as animation director on Who Framed Roger Rabbit he was finally able to get studio financing to take The Thieffrom being a career spanning side project to full-blown production. Astolid perfectionist, costs mounted and deadlines loomed with Williamsat the helm, and Warners eventually pulled out after Disney announcedthe similarly themed Aladdin.

With funding gone, the film was taken from Williams by hiscreditors and was completed by others, cheaply and poorly while makingmassive changes to try to make it more mainstream, and only saw releasein Australia and South Africa as The Princess and the Cobbler. Eventually Disney bought it and heavily edited it again, in such a way as to make it appear a cheap knockoff of Aladdin(instead of the film that's largely credited by animators as thegreatest inspiration behind Disney's film), while making it almostunwatchable in the process. Released as Arabian Knights, it was a travesty.

This Recobbed Cut is a recent fan-created reconstruction ofthe film as Williams wanted it, or as close to as possible based on aworkprint of the film from when Williams was nearing completion andshortly before having the film taken away from him. Using the workprint, DVDs of the two officially released cuts of the film, and other related elements taken from various sources, this Recobbed Cutreveals the masterpiece that could have been, and the single greatesttragedy of professional animation in the past twenty years.
