(FILMAFFINITY)
Plot: A dog, the Marquis, has been imprisoned in The Bastille for his notoriously pornographic writings. He has conversations with Colin, his penis, who dislikes the Marquis’ writings. The rooster governor Gaetan de Preaubois discovers that the cow Justine is pregnant with the king’s child. To save the king embarrassment, de Preaubois and the Dom Pimpero conspire to have Justine placed in the Marquis’s cell where they can then claim the notoriously depraved libertine forced himself upon her. But instead Justine is moved by the Marquis’s prose and the two fall for one another. Revolutionaries want to free the Marquis’s neighbour, the police chief Lupino who imprisoned the Marquis, and the Marquis agrees to give into the rat guard Ambert’s desire to be buggared for the good of the revolution. But he then finds difficulty persuading Colin to accept the task. At the same time Dom Pimpero has found he can make money by selling the Marquis’s pornographic writings without his knowledge, but has difficulty getting his hands on new material.
Marquis comes from the fertile mind of the late Belgian director, writer, novelist and theatrical director Roland Topor. Topor also co-wrote and designed the great French animated sf film Fantastic Planet (1973), and wrote the novel that became the basis of Roman Polanski’s marvelously paranoid The Tenant (1976). He can also be seen playing Renfield in Werner Herzog’s Nosferatu the Vampyre (1979).
Marquis could be described as a crossbreed between Quills (2000) and Meet the Feebles (1990). It’s a reenactment - albeit a loose one - of the life of the Marquis de Sade and the French Revolution - all conducted by puppets, puppets that are decidedly less than Disney or Henson-like. The fact that one of the central characters in the film is the Marquis’s talking penis should give one an idea of where the film is centered.
Marquis makes for fascinating comparison to Quills. Both cover essentially the same territory - de Sade’s imprisonment. (But where Quills is set around de Sade’s later imprisonment in the Charenton asylum, Marquis concerns itself with his earlier incarceration in The Bastille, although it is historically inaccurate here in that de Sade had been moved prior to the Bastille’s storming). Both get inside de Sade’s urge to write no matter what, using sheets and his own blood, although Marquis makes far less melodramatic fuss about the frustrated creative urge than Quills does. Both are also quite sympathetic portraits of de Sade - in fact Marquis goes even further than Quills in seeing de Sade as essentially a peaceable man more interested in the letters than depravity. The film takes a Romantic position - in fact a quite Manichean one - of a man of intellect and letters warring with his sexual drive (and even has an end when his penis takes off to find a life of its own). Although in truth de Sade knew no such restraint, felt no such war between mind and flesh. His work could not be regarded as something pure and aside from his baser urges - his urges plainly overran his work, it was construed as pornography simple and unadulterated.
Marquis has quite a literate script in its satiric take on the Revolution. But where it succeeds the most is in the outrageous joy of its obscene puppets. (Although these aren’t puppets so much as they are actors wearing animal heads, not unakin to a panto version of The Wind in the Willows). The faces are surprisingly fluid and expressive. There are some outrageously entertaining scenes like where the Marquis fucks a hole in a talking wall with his penis; or where he buggars a guard with a lobster; or the guard masturbating milk from the cow heroine’s udders. There are animated visions of a spider becoming an octet of spread female thighs, or a coffin going into the ground becoming an ooutrageous image of it fucking the Earth. Scabrous, brilliant, a classic.

Based on the writings of the Marquis de Sade, this bawdy, one-of-a-kind production features human bodies in puppet-like animal heads, experiencing various throes of sexual, moral and political decadence in and around the famous Bastille prison.

It is intriguing to experience this alternate universe, a world of animalistic craziness created by director Henri Xhonneux and graphic (literally) artist Roland Topor. But there is no towering, transcendent quality to the movie. For the most part, despite that satire, it's a whimsical, one-dimensional titillation of the senses. But it does have its amusing elements. At the end, for instance, when the prison doors are opened, look for Colin to make a clean break.

In the annals of history, there have been few men more misunderstood than Donatien Alphonse Francois de Sade. The mere mention of the ‘Divine Marquis’ often conjures up but one image, even in today’s society, that being the father of the term ‘sadism’. However, Sade was more than a man with some extreme sexual appetites…he was an author (his works caused scandal throughout France with their pornographic subject matter and controversial commentary on society), a playwright, a philosopher, and even something of a politician during the Revolution (despite the fact that he’d been a noble all his life and felt himself above the common man). He also spent much of his life in various prisons (in fact, he died in an institution), wrongly imprisoned by a vindictive mother-in-law for displeasing her (and having an affair with his wife’s sister).
In 1989, French filmmaker Henri Xhonneux would release his film, Marquis, a movie that would attempt to show Sade in a slightly more humanistic light—the irony being that to show Sade as human, he’d resort to literally putting an animal face on the man himself.
Marquis is often referred to as ‘an adult version of The Muppets set in pre-revolutionary France’ or a film along the lines of Peter Jackson’s raunchy muppet flick Meet the Feebles. And while Marquis does feature human actors clad in puppet-like animal heads, I find that comparing it to either The Muppets or Meet the Feebles does Xhonneux’s film a grave disservice.

In a film like this, the acting almost seems secondary (particularly when you consider that all the thespians are hidden behind animal masks). However, everyone does a credible job here managing to blur the line between animal and human. These aren’t simply humans with animal faces—the actors do attempt to portray some of their character’s animal traits in their actions (most notably the rat-faced Ambert who slouches and slinks his way through every scene he’s in). This ultimately makes the film even more surrealistic.

Curiously, for a film about the Marquis, the DVD informs me that:" Cette DVD est exclusivement reservé a l'usage privé et gratuit dans le cercle de la famille"...
Maybe you see the irony here, using the family as the trenched territory of legality

Otoh, "you're my real family", so we're safe
