AMG SYNOPSIS: First released theatrically as a 108-minute, R-rated documentary on January 19, 2003, A Decade Under the Influence is dedicated to the proposition that the 1970s was the single most significant decade in the history of the American cinema. To illustrate this thesis, directors Ted Demme and Richard LaGravenese included choice vignettes from such '70s classics as The Godfather, Chinatown, The Exorcist, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, The Last Picture Show, Taxi Driver, Jaws, and many others. Also featured are in-depth interviews with the filmmakers, actors, and technicians of the period (see the very long, very impressive cast list), all of whom celebrated their "liberation" from the stultifying Hollywood censors and the antediluvian studio system of decades past with an embarrassment of cinematic riches. An expanded version of A Decade Under the Influence was seen as a three-part, three-hour TV miniseries, telecast on cable's Independent Film Channel beginning August 20, 2003. -- Hal Erickson
AMG REVIEW: This unremarkable documentary is certainly impelled by the right intentions, but the final product is curiously devoid of the spirit of critical inquiry and stylistic exploration that animated the best movies of the era it covers. Charting the rise and fall of what critics consider the last golden age of American film, Richard LaGravenese and Ted Demme generously sprinkle their chronicle with clips from the usual suspects, like Easy Rider, Five Easy Pieces, The Godfather, and Taxi Driver. Interspersed throughout are interviews with prominent filmmakers and actors of the period (Martin Scorsese, Robert Altman, Jon Voight), none of whom are eager to disturb the project's air of idolatry and self-congratulation. Conspicuously missing are Steven Spielberg and George Lucas, two titans of the period who also brought the heyday to an end by ushering in a new era of commercial blockbuster filmmaking. Part of the continuing mythologizing of the 1960s and '70s as the last great period of American cinema, A Decade Under the Influence's uncritical rehashing serves its subject poorly by refusing to engage its shortcomings and contradictions -- certainly part of what made the films of the period so alive and trenchant. As it is, the film is not much more than a facile survey of 1960s and '70s Hollywood, perhaps a useful introduction for novices, but of little value to those interested in a serious interrogation of American cinema. -- Elbert Ventura

El documental se está emitiendo actualmente en España a través del Canal TCM (versión VOSE, con subtitulado en castellano completo). Tuve la oportunidad de verlo ayer y es sencillamente magnífico.
No he podido comprobar si el archivo publicado por biciman corresponde a la emisión del canal TCM (la programación indica una duración de 138 m., pero el espacio reservado para la emisión es de 110).
