Dr Jacob Bronowski's magnificent 1973 thirteen part BBC television series The Ascent of Man traced our rise both as a species and as moulders of our own environment and future. It covers the history of science, but of science in the broadest terms. Invention from the flint tool to geometry, from the arch to the theory of relativity, are shown to be expressions of man's specific ability to understand nature, to control it, not to be controlled by it. Dr Bronowski's rare grasp not only of science, but also of its historical and social context, gave him great advantages as an historian of ideas. It is a series which gives us a new perspective not just on science, but on civilisation.

About the author
Jacob Bronowski was born in Łódź, Poland on January 18, 1908. His family moved to Germany during World War I, and then to England in 1920. Although, according to Bronowski, he knew only two English words on arriving in Great Britain[1], he gained admission to the Central Foundation School in London and went on to study at the University of Cambridge.As a mathematics student at Jesus College, Cambridge, Bronowski co-edited - with William Empson - the literary periodical Experiment, which first appeared in 1928. Bronowski would pursue this sort of dual activity, in both the mathematical and literary worlds, throughout his professional life. He received a Ph.D. in mathematics in 1935, writing a dissertation in algebraic geometry. From 1934 to 1942 he taught mathematics at the University of Hull. For a time in the 1930s he lived near Laura Riding and Robert Graves in Majorca.
During World War II Bronowski worked in operations research, and afterwards became Director of Research for the National Coal Board (UK). Following his experiences as an official observer of the after-effects of the Nagasaki and Hiroshima bombings, he turned to biology, as did his friend Leo Szilard, to better understand the nature of violence. Bronowski was an Associate Director of the Salk Institute from 1964.
Jacob Bronowski married Rita Coblentz in 1941. The couple had four children, all daughters, the eldest being the British academic Lisa Jardine.
He first became familiar to the British public through appearances on BBC's The Brains Trust in the late 1950s.
Bronowski died in 1974, a year after finishing the filming of his monumental work, The Ascent of Man, and was buried in the western side of London's Highgate Cemetery, near the entrance.

El ascenso del hombre (The Ascent of Man) es el título de una serie documental científica pionera de la BBC y del libro correspondiente, ambos de la autoría del matemático y humanista Jacob Bronowski, quien fue también el presentador de la serie. Ambas obras abordan la historia de la humanidad desde el punto de vista de sus logros en el ámbito del conocimiento de la naturaleza y del desarrollo artístico.
La serie fue producida en asociación con Time-Life Films y por Adrian Malone.
La serie de televisión, de 13 capítulos, se filmó en 16 mm. El productor ejecutivo fue Adrian Malone, los directores fueron Dick Gilling, Mick Jackson, David Kennard y David Paterson. Malone y Kennard emigrarían luego a Hollywood, donde producirían la serie Cosmos: A Personal Voyage (en español Cosmos) Un viaje personal, de Carl Sagan.
Jackson los seguiría más tarde, y dirige ahora largometrajes.
El título de la serie alude a El origen del hombre, de Charles Darwin. Durante los 13 episodios Jacob Bronowski viaja alrededor del mundo para rastrear el desarrollo de la sociedad humana a través del conocimiento científico. La serie se escribió específicamente como un complemento a Civilisation (Civilización: Una visión personal, obra de Kenneth Clarke (1969) en la que se afirma que el arte fue una de las principales fuerzas impulsoras de la evolución
cultural. Bronowski escribió, en su libro The Common Sense of Science (El sentido común de la ciencia), de 1951: "Uno de los prejuicios modernos más destructivos
ha sido que el arte y la ciencia representan intereses diferentes y, de alguna manera, intereses incompatibles." Ambas series habían sido comisionadas por David Attenborough, por entonces contralor del canal BBC 2, si bien él ya había salido de la empresa para la fecha en la que El ascenso del hombre ya estaba en el aire.

Los ripeos que a continuación os presento fueron realizados por el mvgroup, en contenedor MKV y en VO.
Por mi parte he realizado la sincronización y traducción al español de los subs ingleses incluidos en el mkv.
Pese a ser ripeos en x264, la calidad dista mucho de ser la mejor, aparentemente asi deben ser
las fuentes. Aún asi creo que es la mejor copia existente.'
Los subtítulos ingleses no están completamente sincronizados.
