After working in Hollywood for Griffith and Von Stroheim, Machatý returned to Czechoslovakia to direct his first feature. Based on the Tolstoy novel, the film denounces the hypocrisy of society while recounting the story of a wealthy man who kills his wife. Machatý employs a flamboyant style that he would later perfect with Erotikon.
