Sinopsis:
A classic slice of silent-screen Americana, Henry King's Tol'able David embodies the rustic lyricism and homespun humor reminiscent of D.W. Griffith's Way Down East that would later characterize the most memorable works of John Ford and Frank Capra.
Richard Barthelmess (Broken Blossoms, All Quiet on the Western Front) stars as an Appalachian youth on the verge of manhood who finds the opportunity to prove his grit when the sleepy town of Greenstream is invaded by a trio of vile mountain men (led by Ernest Torrence). After his brother is killed while driving a mail wagon and his father dies as a consequence, David is looked upon as a coward by the community for not avenging their deaths. Fate intervenes, however, when the boy is suddenly called upon to pilot the mail coach on a path leading directly past the nefarious Hatburn brothers, just as they are tormenting David's childhood sweetheart (Gladys Hulette).
This utterly charming family drama was beautifully photographed on bucolic locations in the mountains of Virginia, where director Henry King lived in his own boyhood. In a rare interview featured in this cassette, King (whose other credits include Jesse James, The Song of Bernadette, and Twelve O'Clock High, recounts his early career and discusses the making of Tol'able David.
