1.1.1.- Actualidades.

Las actualidades filmadas han sido definidas como una secuencia que recoge “escenas intrascendentes, que no tienen interés por [...] lo que muestran, sino por su existencia como meros registros de la realidad”. Son propias de la primera etapa del cinematógrafo, cuando se denominaban «vistas» o «temas actuales», y el mejor ejemplo lo constituyen los cortos de los hermanos Lumiére, la factoría Edison y el realizador británico Robert W. Paul.
Las actualidades filmadas nos permiten apreciar los primeros ensayos del cine desde el punto de vista temático y narrativo, tanto en el campo de la ficción como en el documental. En este caso, deben considerarse propiamente como documentales, pese a su aparente simplicidad, ya que son una "representación de la realidad"; la filmación de un determinado evento en lugar de otro implica una elección (aunque sea por motivos puramente comerciales) y, en muchas ocasiones, estos acontecimientos eran preparados o recreados para ser captados por la cámara.

Comentario. Film perteneciente al género de “vistas” o actualidades cinematográficas, está dividido en cuatro partes: en la primera, la cámara recoge una panorámica del Kremlin y el puente Marshal; la segunda muestra imágenes de las calles de la ciudad, surcadas por trineos; a continuación, se detiene en el mercado y los puestos de venta de pescado, mostrando imágenes de vendedores y personajes populares; en tercer lugar, se traslada al parque Petrovksky, lugar de recreo de las clases altas. En conjunto, supone una interesante visión del Moscú de comienzos de siglo.

Una noticia filmada es una película, generalmente de corta duración, que recoge un acontecimiento completo, poseedor de algún tipo de significado y en base a un criterio predeterminado. Puede estar compuesta de un plano único (sin montaje) o de un conjunto de planos, pero siempre centrados en el mismo tema, y su valor depende del valor histórico-documental de la noticia en cuestión. Generalmente no se presentaban al público de forma aislada, sino agrupadas junto a otras noticias o, más tarde, en el seno de los “noticiarios” y “revistas cinematográficas” (v.).

1.1.3.- Noticias reconstruidas.

Hay que diferenciar las “noticias filmadas” de las “noticias reconstruidas”, acontecimientos recreados expresamente con el objeto de ser filmados, que no pertenecen plenamente al campo del cine documental. Los distintos conflictos bélicos que se desencadenaron durante la etapa inmediatamente posterior al nacimiento del cinematógrafo nos ofrecen un amplio conjunto de muestras de este tipo de cine, como la guerra hispano-norteamericana de 1898, donde destacan El hundimiento de la escuadra del almirante Cervera, filmada por Edward H. Arnet en la piscina del jardín de su casa, o las recreaciones rodadas por la Compañía Edison en New Jersey con la colaboración de la Guardia Nacional en el año 1899.

Their Majesties, Royalty, Clergy, and other Distinguished Personages taking part in the Coronation are impersonated by accomplished actors and actresses, every detail as to costumes, robes, regalia, coronation chairs, chair of state, Abbey arrangements, etc., being as faithfully reproduced as possible, in order to convey the scene to the millions who are not privileged to witness the actual proceedings. Only such portions of the ceremony as would admit of action have been selected for purposes of this representation, thus greatly reducing the duration of the actual performance, and blending the same into a consecutive series, enacted in the most impressive and dignified manner, and in the following order, viz: 1. Comentario. Tras la muerte de la reina Victoria y, con motivo del ascenso al trono de su hijo Eduardo VII, el cineasta francés Georges Meliès recibió el encargo de reconstruir la escena de la coronación, que sería insertada entre imágenes reales de la comitiva real rodadas en exteriores, para facilitar su inmediata distribución. Meliès filmó la secuencia unos días antes de que se desarrollase en realidad la ceremonia con un amplio grupo de actores y figurantes y gran lujo de detalles, aunque acortando considerablemente la duración del evento.

1.1.4.- Las “actualidades locales” de Mitchell & Kenyon.

A comienzos del siglo XX la compañía Mitchell & Kenyon (Blackburn, 1897), fundada por los camarógrafos Sagar Mitchell y James Kenyon, realizó por encargo de distintas empresas de exhibición un conjunto de cortometrajes de actualidades publicitados como “películas locales para un público local”. Entre 1900 y 1913 recorrieron el norte de Inglaterra, Escocia, Irlanda y Gales filmando una amplia serie de cortos documentales que retrataban la vida cotidiana de personas de todas las clases sociales de la época eduardiana: sus actividades laborales, el ocio y los espectáculos deportivos, las conmemoraciones religiosas... Estas películas permanecieron olvidadas durante décadas, hasta que en 1994 fueron descubiertas en el sótano de una tienda de fotografía en Blackburn, Lancashire. Seis años más tarde, las 826 bobinas de película de nitrato fueron donadas al British Film Institute que procedió a su restauración, en colaboración con la BBC.

Con este material se realizó en primer lugar una recopilación para una serie de televisión en 3 capítulos emitida por BBC Two, The Lost World of Mitchell & Kenyon (2004), luego editada en Dvd por el BFI. Posteriormente el BFI ha editado tres nuevas compilaciones: Electric Edwardians (2005), que contiene 35 cortometrajes rodados entre 1900 y 1906 en el norte de Inglaterra; Mitchell & Kenyon in Ireland (2007), con 26 cortometrajes rodados en Irlanda entre1901 y 1902; y Edwardian Sports (2007), recopilación de cortometrajes sobre temas deportivos rodados entre 1901 y 1907.

1.2.- Noticiarios y revistas cinematográficas.

1.2.1.- Noticiarios cinematográficos.

Los noticiarios son “un conjunto de noticias filmadas montadas según un formato convencional y distribuidas en series de periodicidad fija en base a una duración estándar”. Tuvieron su etapa de esplendor entre los años 20 y la década de 1950, cuando la llegada de la televisión y los noticiarios televisivos los abocaron a una crisis irreversible, y formaban parte de los programas habituales de las salas de exhibición. Su periodicidad era muy elevada: una o dos veces por semanas, a lo sumo, de forma quincenal. En cuanto a los contenidos, destaca la preponderancia de noticias de carácter frívolo o intrascendente (notas de sociedad, funerales, desfiles militares, concursos de belleza, reportajes turísticos o folklóricos, deportes, catástrofes naturales...) frente a las noticias realmente vinculadas con la realidad política, social o económica (excepto los noticiarios de guerra). Finalmente, hay que destacar el hecho de que, durante largo tiempo, fueron la principal fuente de información para buena parte del público (hasta la llegada de la televisión), por lo que todos los países con un cierto grado de desarrollo socioeconómico contaron con uno o varios noticiarios estables, y que, precisamente por esta razón, fueron objeto de un severo control informativo en los estados totalitarios, que asumieron el monopolio de dichos noticiarios.

Sinopsis. The Peek Frean biscuit factory, Keeton's Road, Bermondsey, South London. The boiler room generates the steam that runs the overall biscuit-making operation. Milk and flour is delivered and unloaded. The various ingredients are collected, weighed and mixed, and the resulting dough is rolled out onto trays. These are placed in the cutting machine to form the biscuit shapes, and then transferred to the ovens. After baking, women pack the biscuits into tins. The factory workers undergo a fire drill (with appliances) in the yard and have a lunch break. Empty biscuit tins are washed, and full tins are weighed, labelled and soldered for export. The tins are packed into crates and boxes and loaded onto a conveyor belt. Horse-drawn carts and vans are assembled and loaded. They transport the biscuits out of the factory for distribution to the outside world (Screenonline).

Sinopsis. A miner leaves his cottage in the morning, his family waving goodbye. The pit head; locking the lamps. The miners enter a lift and descend to the pits. At the coalface, miners hack at the coal with pickaxes, while other men and boys load the coal into trolleys. The coal is hoisted to the pit's mouth, where men, women and boys commence unloading. The waste is hoisted to the pit's mouth; a group of women load wooden props and sort, screen and load the coal into trucks. The coal trains leave the pit. The miners return to the pit head, and receive their pay. The miner returns home after work. A middle-class family sit around an open fire upon which a maid places more coal (Screenonline).
