A powerful and defiant short film, an ingenious genealogy of our times: as Adorno wrote in Minima Moralia, we live in a prosecution of Nazi period and this Europe is the dream-come-true of Doktor Goebbels…
On October 27th, 2005, at Clichy-sous-Bois, three frightened young men who were being chased by the police hid inside an off-limits, high-voltage electric transformer. Two of them, Bouna and Zyed, were burnt to death/electrocuted - the event that sparked the uprising in France last year.
Shot last spring on digital video (Straub/Huillet first one!) on the site of the teen deaths, in the suburb Clichy-sous-Bois and thought and shown as an anonymous Cinétract, EUROPA 2005 - 27 OCTOBRE is the first film of a project created by enrico ghezzi for Fuori Orario (RAI TRE), to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the birth of Roberto Rossellini. Numerous filmmakers were asked to imagine “a moment in the life or the death” of the character portrayed by Ingrid Bergman in Europa ’51 (1952) after the final frame of the film.
Two circular pans repeated 5 times, each different (look at the clouds in the sky, at the borders of the frame, at the barking of the invisible dog).

Europa 2005, 27 de octubre. Estación eléctrica en Clichy-sous-Bois. La cámara ascética de Jean-Marie Straub se mueve lentamente hacia la derecha. “Stop. Ne risque pás ta vie” (no arriesgues tu vida) luce un letrero a la manera del grafitti. Nótese cómo un suave movimiento de cámara es un ejercicio de paso del tiempo en este pequeño tratado de cine.
En el principio no existía letrero, no existía muro, no existían manos teñidas de sangre. Donde hay hoy un muro ayer no lo había y para saber esto hay que volver para atrás. De ahí que vuelva sobre sus pasos la cámara, para recordar que no había muro. Recordar es un ejercicio de tiempo y silencio. La subestación eléctrica es la proyección en el tiempo de la chambre a gàz y de la chaise éléctrique (la cámara de gas y la silla eléctrica). Como decía ese otro maravilloso ilusionista, Rene Lavand, no se puede hacer más lento.
