The last one of Jissoji's early new wave trilogy, the other two are MUJOU (1970), MANDARA (1971). From ATG studio.

I Can't find more info about this film, it's pity only few webs on net introduced this wonderful director, I think he should be remarked in the same status with any newwave icons like Imamura, Wakamatsu or Oshima. I can assure Poem is one of his best work, best cinematograph and soundtrack.

......

This Transient Life is a rare example of a successful film about Buddhist thought. Despite the scandalous story, the film treats the topic with the utmost sincerity, without retreating to esoteric kitsch or religious mumbo jumbo. Jissoji, himself the descendant of an old Buddhist family, continued to tackle religious and philosophical topics in his subsequent films, among them Mandala (Mandara, 1971) and Poem (Uta, 1972), both produced by ATG and based on scripts by Jissoji's congenial partner Toshiro Ishido. Jissoji's concern with Buddhist thought can also be seen in his popular films. The Buddhist notion of salvation clearly reverberates in the Ultraman series, in which the supernatural hero from outer space rescues men from forces that want to destroy the earth.

Akio Jissoji's importance for Japanese cinema can be compared to that of Christian directors like Carl Dreyer or Robert Bresson for European cinema. But whereas Dreyer and Bresson are luminaries on the cinematic firmament, the star of Akio Jissoji still shines in the hidden.

Thanks, auess!

Japanese New Wave / ATG titles are always welcome! :plas:

PS: By the way, do you have The Transient Life as well?..

PPS: Man! That screenshot with Imagen (the second one in the top row)!.. 8O

PPPS: Hey, auess, one more thing, I am really sorry to mention this, but I think that, for distribution, it is better to keep the file size smaller than 1CD. I am only saying this because I'd like more people on the Internet to get an access to the innovative Japanese cinema. Bu hao yisi...

The Transient Life had been released in china about 4-5 years ago, but att I didn't know this director so unfortunately I missed it, since then it never appear again, I'm looking for it too, and hope I can find it in some second-hand dvd market.

I just have MANDARA (1971) and this.

about file size i forgot to say there's a 4:30mins trailer at the begining so my rip's length is actually 123mins, if you cut that trailer I think it will be very fit a 1cd.

8O Thanks Auess! Another gem :plas:

I'm somehow unsure about the need for CD-sized release for movies longer than 90min but not long enough (or too compressible) to warrant a 2CD release - I'd guess people who use to download and keep these rare movies should really have a way to use DVDR by now... now there may be the lone exception, but we're talking about quickly evanescing numbers, they should be catered only when this doesn't mean sacrificing quality imho...
