'SO INTENSELY HISTORICAL': SPECTRES OF THEATRE, PHANTOMS OF REVOLUTION IN MARX AND MARKER
Reviewing Chris Marker's epic montage documentary, A Grin Without a Cat (in French, untranslatably, the soixante-huitard slogan Le Fond de l'air est rouge) upon its recent belated US release, the critic J. Hoberman invoked a received image of Marker as the irreducibly individualist essayist, finding the film "more impressionistic than analytical.…a tract without a thesis." This paper draws on some suggestive parallels with Karl Marx's "The Civil War in France", the account of the suppression of the Paris Commune exactly 100 years earlier, to offer one more concrete interpretative frame for Marker's sceptical eulogy of the revolutionary spirit of the New Left. In their parallel accounts of revolutionary defeat, rather than the spectre of Communism famously invoked by Marx in the opening lines of the Communist Manifesto, it is the phantom of revolution that haunts Marx and Marker alike - that is, the fear that revolution will ultimately prove, precisely, phantasmic. In both texts, this anxiety unfolds through a shared trope of the theatrical, invoked as a figure of illusion, fantasy, and ultimately of loss.

Le Fond de l’Air est rouge es además un ensayo sobre el poder de las imágenes y un esfuerzo por ponerlas a salvo del olvido.
Las voces en off, sirven aquí para restituir a la historia su carácter diverso y plantear, una vez más, la desmitificación de la pretendida objetividad del documental.
Dos partes articulan ese retrato colectivo: “Las manos frágiles” y “las manos cortadas”. Aunque ambas se suceden cronológicamente, entre una y otra ha habido una ruptura en el seno de las luchas sociales y empieza a no estar claro dónde está el enemigo. En el futuro, los movimientos de izquierda ya no perseguirán el asalto de la fortaleza y las batallas se harán locales, diseminándose en el interior de sociedades fuertemente institucionalizadas. Pero esto comenzaba entonces, cuando en 1977 Chris Marker ya había proyectado su melancólica ironía sobre las propias imágenes del documental. Como dice Marcelo Expósito, la lúcida mirada de Marker escenifica la explosión y fragmentación del sujeto político clásico. (...) No es solamente (la película) un resumen tenso del ciclo sesentayochista, pues se trata de un film sin pretensiones de clausura, sin ajustes de cuentas ni épicas falsas.
