With stunning visuals and acerbic satire, Prefab Story (also known as Panelstory) chronicles the opening of a mammoth Czech apartment building complex filled with motley residents. Using a farcical tone, Chytilová comments on the housing shortage in Czechoslovakia while highlighting the gaps among several generations.
Materialism, sex, treatment of the old, violence and corruption are just some of the themes of Chytilová’s uncompromising portrait of contemporary morality. Set in a modern housing development it offers a cross-section of society from youth to old age, from TV star to housepainter. While not in the avant-garde tradition of her ‘60s films, this unusually critical work is reinforced by aggressive imagery.
