The Credo of SMz
Here at SurrealMoviez, the focus is away from the mainstream, leaning heavily towards experimental movies, surreal movies, independent movies, extreme cinema, artistic movies... etc...

What is mainstream?
As it fits very well, we cite the manifesto of KaraGarga for this question: "The definition of "mainstream" is very elusive and almost impossible to state precisely. It is within the discretion of the tracker moderators to decide on each specific case. As a general rule, we limit our definition of mainstream to Hollywood and Bollywood movies made after the 70s. Classic Hollywood movies are allowed and welcome - even though some of them may enjoy mainstream popularity, we have high respect for their artistic quality and importance in cinema history. We draw the line with the advent of the big-buget Hollywood blockbuster (with movies like Jaws and Star Wars) which brought on a rapid deterioration in the quality of movies. Modern independent productions are allowed and we might make special exceptions for new Hollywood movies from special directors. Also allowed are most "mainstream" movies from other countries - what might be a common mainstream movie in Hungary might be totally unknown elsewhere. For further information, see this collective forum thread for the discussion of the "mainstreamness" of specific movies."

No more: "We need the numbers to grow!"
A lot of mainstream movies on the site are from an earlier time, when the database was much smaller than today. With the enormous growth of the site, we need to focus stronger on the site's concept. The problem is not, that we don’t have enough movies; the opposite is the case. That's the reason, why since more than a year, only very few mainstream movies were accepted. This doesn't mean, that we think they're bad. It's just our task to preserve the site’s conception.

The Admin and the User's perspective
There are at least two perspectives within a submission process: The view of the user and the view of the administrator. The decisions of the administrators is not mandatory their personal opinion. As said before, it’s much more the view of a manager, who has to think about consequences, different interests etc.

Let me make some examples: One submits a row of movies with extreme violence, raping and torturing. If we allow this several times, it will be clear, that SMz is a place to share extreme violence films and the uploaders begin to provide similar additions.

Another example: Someone uploads a movie related to sexuality of children. It is the task of the staff to think about the consequences of the possible forms of consumption and application. Of course, we know that many people would watch it as document of a bad film making, perversion or as exploitation of children etc. But are these reasons to add films of this kind to the site?

Or a bit more in the way of the second perspective: Is SMz the right place to share this? There are more than enough places to share pornography, hardcore and violence films; but there are only a few, were the cinematic dimension is so decisive like on SMz.

For the availability of the rare and not of the masses
In general: films that you get easily on any other site, won't be accepted in most cases. There's no sense to use SMz for this purpose since it's much more important to save this place for films, which fit to the concept.

The Concept of making good Exceptions
As you know and as you can see, we are against strictly prohibitions! Especially if they have some cinematic merit on their behalf. Also if they belong to important collections on the site. It’s all about making “good” exceptions. In the past, we often learned from users many things about films, we wanted to reject. There is the possibility of making a separate explanation, which you can send in advance. If it is considered as good, we will add it in the additional info field.
