Gloria Swanson [23/07/2008] (Actriz)

"He atravesado un largo aprendizaje.

Plot: When Swanson's father becomes rich, she and her mother (Holmes) embark on a European vacation where they learn how the rich act and behave. They return to their hometown where they are ready to enter into the local upper crust.

Comments: This was Gloria's first major role and she was initially excited about it but soon became disappointed when she discovered that it was as ridiculous as the other features she had been appearing in.

Plot: Three girls vow to remain spinsters but their promises are broken on a camping trip when they encounter three boys who have romance on their minds.

Comments: This was to be Gloria's last film at the Essanay studios in Chicago. She would move to California and begin making films there after Wallace Beery encouraged her to follow him there. She was still not enthusiastic about filmmaking and wanted to pursue a music career instead.

Plot: A temptress is hired by a British countess to break up a duke's marriage

Comments: Swanson (sixteen at the time) was playing a 30 year old woman

very glamorous in the role and revealed a taste of what was to come in her
future career.

The "Sweedie" films were a series of short films featuring Wallace Beery as a gawky Swedish maid which were immensely popular with the public. They mainly consisted of pratfalls and involved Sweedie getting herself into various humorous situations. In this one, Sweedie gets a job at a girl's college dormitory. Swanson was cast as a snooty debutante.

Comments: Overall, Swanson despised the slapstick shorts like Sweedie and thought that they were distasteful. Luckily, this was the only one she had to appear in. It was on the set of Sweedie Goes To College that Gloria met her future first husband, Wallace Beery.

Commnets: When Mack Sennett hired Gloria Swanson, he thought she would be perfect as a romantic interest for actor Bobby Vernon. She was first cast, however, in this forgettable film with Wallace Beery. Swanson was pleased to find that acting in California was more fun than it had been in Chicago

Another romantic triangle between Swanson (playing a fencing instructor), Earl Rodney and Bobby Vernon. Swanson was always adament that she was never one of the Sennett Bathing Beauties. The girls do appear in this film but of course Gloria is not one of them. The Nick of Time Baby also starred Teddy, a famous canine star at the time.

When Mack Sennett first saw Gloria Swanson, he felt that
she would be right as a romantic lead for Bobby Vernon because they were both small in stature. This was their first film together and they proved to be a big hit with the public. Their films together would be romantic comedies but still retain some slapstick which was what the public expected from a Sennett Keystone production.

Charles Parrott got the idea for The Danger Girl after seeing Gloria drive like a speed demon through the Keystone Studio gates one day. Wallace Beery had been teaching her to drive and Gloria loved the power she had behind the wheel.

The story revolves around a girl who desperately wants to be a race car driver and disguises herself as a man in order to pull off the charade. It was one of the first roles that Gloria really sank her teeth into and she worked hard at perfecting her part.

Swanson had not started working with Cecil B. De Mille yet although this certainly resembles one of his epics. A costume comedy with a large cast (Sennett's Bathing Beauties were used as extras in the harem scenes), it also starred the reliable Teddy the Dog. Swanson did not remember much about the film in her memoirs but it is known that Sennett was unhappy with the final results and had the film reedited.

Swanson was pretty much fed up with the roles and the types of films that she had to play and told Mack Sennett that she needed a raise. He refused and, in retaliation, Gloria went to Universal Studios and was cast in Baseball Madness which was part of a series of baseball movies. Sennett decided to give Swanson her raise because he was afraid that she might stay with Universal. Swanson enjoyed her work on this film but it was not the type of film that she really wanted to do (which was drama).

Comentarios
One of Gloria's most memorable Keystone pictures, Teddy At The Throttle has Gloria tied to the railroad tracks by villainous Beery while Teddy the dog rushes to her rescue. It was one of the first pictures where Gloria insisted on doing her own stunts and she won the admiration of director Clarence Badger and the entire movie crew. The major stunt called for a stunt man to crawl into a hole underneath the railroad tracks to escape the train. Gloria listened to the director's instructions and boldly interjected that she wanted to do the stunt herself. This would not be the last time that Gloria bravely did her own stunts.

Gloria had separated from Wallace Beery by this time and disliked being around him on the set. Badger, who was fully aware of the circumstances, tried to keep their rehearsals brief which Gloria was extremely grateful for.

This was Gloria's last film with Mack Sennett and she was glad of it. She detested making the slapstick comedies and thought that they were vulgar and cheap. Sennett, in financial difficulties, had sold the Keystone name and many of his actors (including Bobby Vernon) to Triangle. He was getting back on his feet again and told Gloria that he had big plans for her which included making her into another Mabel Normand. Gloria brushed off his suggestions and said that she did not want to be another "second" anybody. Sennett tore up her contract (which is what Gloria hoped he would do) and Gloria went to Triangle. She had decided that if she were going to be an actress, she wanted to be a stylish actress and that image did not include the silly girls that graced the Sennett films.

This was Gloria's first film with Triangle and director Jack Conway and the Triangle executives were so impressed with her that they decided to build her up to star status. This film was to be her important introduction, so they decided to hold it back and let her film two other pictures (Society For Sale and Her Decision) with big name male actors so the public would get to know her. Conway advised Gloria on her acting (and she later stated that he taught her many new techniques about film acting) and he photographed her with the utmost care. The results were amazing and Swanson was on her way to stardom.

The opportunity to work with Cecil B. De Mille was a dream come true for Gloria. She was working with a talented man who was a true professional and she was making expensive films that would be well liked by both critics and the public. Cecil B. De Mille's film productions were always elaborate. His sets were filled with real furniture and antiques and he provided his actors with genuine clothes and jewelry. Gloria later said that she hated going home at night because her home furnishings were drab compared to his sets. Swanson and De Mille understood each other and they both knew what they wanted. They were a great professional match.

Don't Change Your Husband was a watershed film for Gloria. It opened in January 1919 and was held over for two weeks in New York, which was unheard of at the time.

Plot: Swanson is torn between two men, a World War I soldier and a children's doctor. She marries the soldier but while he is away at war, her feelings for the doctor get stronger.

Swanson's second film with De Mille would not be as memorable as Don't Change Your Husband and it recieved some bad reviews. One device that De Mille liked to employ in his films were flashbacks in which the characters were presented in another time reliving the same situations. Some critics felt that these sequences were hooky and only gave De Mille an excuse to use elaborate sets and costumes. The critics were probably right but audiences loved it during the time. In For Better, For Worse, the flashback was set in Colonial times.

Plot: An English aristocratic family are shipwrecked on a deserted island. The butler, because of his sheer common sense, becomes master and Gloria's character falls in love with him. When the family is rescued and they return home, their roles revert back to their original role.

This film was based on an immensely popular play titled The Admirable Crichton by James A Barrie (the title was changed because the producers thought that the public would think the film was about the navy). It turned out to be Gloria's best film to date. It was an incisive portrait of class structure and society. The inevitable flashback scene called for Gloria to be fed to a den of lions because she will not abandon her religion. When the famous scene was ready to be filmed (it was filmed last) Gloria, wearing a fabulous dress made of pearls and feathers, bravely walked onto the set and into the lions den and lay on the floor. The lion walked over to her and placed his paw on her back. Everyone on the set was holding their breath and Gloria herself claimed that she was terrified. After the completion of the scene, De Mille gave Gloria a mesh purse adorned with a sapphire as a token of his appreciation.

Plot: A woman dismisses the love of a crippled man for that of a handsomer man. When he is killed in an accident, she returns with their son to find hostility from her father. The crippled man takes her in for the sake of the son and eventually the two fall in love with each other.

Another film that was below par from the other De Mille /Swanson efforts, this one was heavy on melodrama but weak on scripting. Swanson was reunited with actor Elliot Dexter who had been ill for the past year.

Plot: A man divorces his dowdy wife for a more glamourous girl. The spurned wife sets out to win him back by improving her appearance.

After the great success of Male and Female, De Mille took the same cast and put them in this film which was a redress of Don't Change Your Husband. Gloria got to showcase the latest fashions and some critics felt that it was more of a fashion show than a movie but the public loved it. Critics could not help compare Bebe Daniels with Swanson, but both actresses came across nicely without overshadowing the other.

Plot: Two men in love with the same woman are further complicated by the arrival of a second woman.

The executives at Paramount were eager to get another Swanson film out to the public since Under The Lash had performed miserably at the box office. So they went back to The Affairs of Anatol and excised cut footage of one of Anatol's affairs and made a feature length film from it! It turned out surprisingly well. It also placated those memories of Under The Lash.

Plot: The wife of a tyranicanical Boer husband discovers what life could be like when a handsome Englishmen visits their home.

Under The Lash was the first Swanson film that did not make money at the box office. Jesse Lasky felt that the reason for this was because Gloria did not wear glamorous clothing and her female fans were disappointed. This was probably true, but the film itself was a departure for Swanson from her usual fare. Some critics thought that she was miscast but others praised her performance.

Plot: A English girl from a noble family falls in love with an American engineer much to the dismay of her father.

This was Gloria's first starring role with her name above the title. The story was written by British writer Elinor Glyn who had just written a racy play called Three Weeks. Glyn, who thrived on controversy, made sure that The Great Moment would have its share. One scene called for Gloria to be bitten on the breast by a rattlesnake. Her engineer boyfriend was supposed to suck the poison out. In the end, the snake bite was moved to Gloria's shoulder but the stories that leaked from the fan magazines ensued that the public would come to see the film in droves. The costumes were as extravagant as ever with one of Gloria's dresses sporting a four foot train made of pearls and ermine tails.

Plot: A cheating husband finally comes to his senses after he realizes that he is about to loose his faithful wife.

This was another controversial story and it was a great success at the box office. Gloria had just given birth to her first daughter a month earlier and she was not really ready to make another film but agreed after De Mille asked her. He wanted her for one more picture before their contract expired. Gloria was about to sign a new contract with Paramount. She did not really want to leave De Mille but in those days there could not be too many big stars on one project and De Mille felt that Gloria was ready to go out on her own. During the next several years, all of her films would be directed by Sam Wood, a former assistant of De Mille.

Finally, after so many mushy romances, Prodigal Daughters offered a change of pace. It was a briskly directed film that offered keen insight into the gap that was developing in the country between children and their parents. The critics gave it generally good reviews. Some of the location scenes for the film were shot at Gloria's new mansion that she had just bought in Beverly Hills.

Plot: On the eve of her marriage, a French girl discovers that her husband to be is commonly known as "Bluebeard" because he has shed seven wives.

This was originally a play that Ina Claire did on Broadway in 1921. Paramount bought the property for Swanson. The comedy was somewhat risque (for the time) and had suggestive dialog so, with the Hays office in full swing, the censors were watching and listening. The film was remade in 1938 by Ernst Lubitsch and starred Claudette Colbert. The latter version came off better because the dialog could be slyly tailored to get around the censors. Still, Swanson's version did well and was liked by the critics and public.

Plot: A French music hall performer falls in love with a married man but renounces him when she finds out about his wife and child.

Gloria was as popular as ever with the movie going public but she herself wanted the chance to do more serious pictures and felt that her last slew of films did nothing but show off fabulous dresses. Mickey Neilan (a director that Gloria was seeing at the time) arranged to have Gloria meet with director Alan Dwan in New York to discuss making a film with him. Dwan worked for Paramount but he disliked Hollywood and had his own studio in Astoria, Long Island. Dwan was so valuable to Paramount that he was given this perk and Adolphe Zukor rarely said no to his requests. Dwan met with Gloria and discussed Zaza, which Dwan felt was perfect for her. Zukor reluctantly agreed to let Gloria do the film.

Gloria and Dwan worked very well together and Zaza was a success. This film was again hampered somewhat by the Hays Office. It was remade in 1930's with Claudette Colbert.

The answer came when she was introduced to scriptwriter Forest Halsey who was working on The Humming Bird (based on an earlier play by Maud Fulton) for director Sidney Olcott. Plot: A woman seeks revenge on her husband's divorce lawyer who ruined her reputation but they end up falling in love with each other.

Zukor and the executives at Paramount were so pleased with Zaza that they agreed to let Gloria remain in New York and make another film with Allan Dwan. They insisted however that Gloria be gloriously gowned because she had not been in her previous two films. Forrest Halsey (who wrote The Humming Bird) also penned this script which would cast Swanson against two strong and handsome leading men (Cortez and La Rocque). Swanson ended up having an intense affair with La Rocque that almost led to marriage but she eventually ended it due to his jealousy.

Swanson again received glowing reviews and most critics observed that her acting had improved.

Plot: A department store clerk falls in love with a struggling inventor but she becomes sidetracked by life in high society.

Manhandled is one of Swanson's best silent films. The script was based on a short story that appeared in the Saturday Evening Post. Gloria worked incognito in a department store for two days to get the feel of her character and it definitely helped. It is one of Swanson's best remembered silent roles and she received some of her strongest reviews.

Manhandled has several memorable scenes. The first is a hilarious sequence in which Gloria leaves work for a hectic ride home on the subway. It is apparent that New York's subway system was as crowded then as it is today. Another scene has Gloria impersonating Charlie Chaplin at a party. She would reprise this impersonation again in Sunset Boulevard.

After the success of Manhandled, it was obvious that Allan Dwan was one of Swanson's best directors. This would allow Gloria to stay in New York and work at the Astoria Studios instead of returning to Hollywood.

Dwan followed the popular Manhandled with a film that was another smash hit for Gloria. Her Love Story was based on a Mary Roberts Rinehart story and gave Gloria yet another opportunity to wear some fabulous gowns. However, this role again allowed her to show her acting range and the critics were impressed. Gloria was at the height of her fame and popularity in 1924 and Her Love Story was the epitome of Swanson.

Dwan hit his mark again with Wages of Virtue, a film that utilized the actors and the locales to maximum advantage. It was filmed completely on the Astoria lot but the filmmakers did an excellent job of evoking the atmosphere of Algiers. Gloria's leading men continued to change with each film, albeit with success, and good looking Ben Lyon provided a worthy presence opposite her. Plot: A French washerwoman becomes a duchess and a friend of Napoleon.

In late 1923, Swanson, like every other Hollywood actress, was dying to play Peter Pan in the soon to be film version. She figured that the best way to get the part was to go to Europe and convince the writer J.M. Barrie that she was right for the role. Her friend Forrest Halsey (who wrote many of her screenplays during this time) suggested that while she was there, she might try to obtain the film rights to Madame Sans Gene (Madame Doesn't Care) by the playwright Victorine Sardou. Gloria loved the play and both she and Halsey felt that it could only be made in France but they were doubtful if permission could be obtained from the French government.

As soon as Gloria arrived in London, she learned that an actress named Betty Bronson had been chosen for Peter Pan. She was bitterly disappointed but reasoned that while she was there she could at least check about Madame Sans Gene. She headed for France and first pitched the idea to the French film critic Andre Daven who thought that it was a wonderful idea and that the French people would not be against her doing it. He proceeded to write an article which brought a good deal of attention and it was all positive. In no time, Gloria had not only won the right to film the play but she also received permission to use three of Napoleon's residences.

Gloria would be the only American actor in the film and there would be two versions filmed, one for the American market and the other for France. The filming was an enjoyable experience for everyone involved. Madame Sans Gene was eventually cut in Hollywood but its full length remained intact for the French audience. The film turned out to be a great success, especially in the foreign market. Paramount staged a momentous premiere just as Gloria returned from France with her newly acquired husband, the Marquis de la Falaise de la Coudraye, who was employed as her translator while in France.

Plot: A woman abandons her child to live a carefree life in France. Years later, after she has become a bored Countess and can see the errors of her past, she meets her daughter on the French Riviera and tries to save her from the same fate.

Following the tremendous success of Madame Sans Gene, Swanson returned to Hollywood and was reunited with Allan Dwan for her next film. She was very excited about the prospect of playing a dual role (she plays both the mother and the daughter in The Coast of Folly) and made a decision to carefully choose her roles from here on out and to select only film parts that presented a challenge for her. The critical reviews for her previous films had already pointed out that her acting had improved tremendously from her earlier days.

The Coast of Folly was, not surprisingly, a great success. Gloria had not played a modern girl since Manhandled and audiences and critics were crazy about the film and they were impressed with her portrayal of the older Countess. With Allan Dwan as her director and Forrest Halsey as screenwriter, Gloria seemed to have found the magic team and she was now making the best films of her career.

Plot: A waitress dreams of becoming a great actress in order to win the affection of a stage struck co-worker.

Stage Struck was filmed entirely on location in the small river town of New Martinsville, West Virginia. The entire town was "stage struck" over the presence of Gloria and the film crew and they watched their every move. Gloria recalls the filming fondly in her autobiography and remembered all of the humorous events that took place involving the locals. The fantasy sequence in which the waitress Jennie Hagen imagines herself playing Salome was filmed back at the studios and was filmed in 2-color Technicolor which was rare at the time. After viewing the rushes, Gloria accurately predicted that it would be a big hit.

Sadly, this would be the last film for Gloria and director Allan Dwan. She had signed with Universal Studios and was about to become her own producer. As a result, Jesse Lasky was furious and as a means of punishment, he dismissed Allan Dwan as her next director.

This was Swanson's last film for Paramount before her contract expired. After this film, she was on her own. Like the film that preceded this one, Fine Manners lacked the production values of what one had come to expect from a Swanson picture and the story was weak. Gloria continued to learn the ways of filmmaking because she would need it for her first independently produced film.

Plot: A spoiled rich girl is brought down to earth by the man who loves her.

Untamed Lady received poor reviews from the critics and Swanson herself felt that the studio was just trying to make money on her name alone. The usual lavish expense was not lauded on this film as Swanson's previous ones and the absence of director Allan Dwan was sorely felt. Frank Tuttle, a former screenwriter (he worked on Manhandled) was hired as director and his experience was minimal. Swanson decided to learn as much as she could about filmmaking on this movie because she felt she would need it when she became her own producer. Plot: A girl gazes into a crystal ball to see her future with three different men and chooses the one who offers her true love.

For her first production for United Artists, Swanson decided to do a remake of Clara Kimball Young's 1919 film Eyes of Youth. It did not take her long to realize that film production was not what it was cracked up to be. There were numerous problems with Sunya which included complicated special effects, a budget that kept getting higher and higher and Swanson's own drive for perfection. She ended up having to borrow money to finance the film. The experience was very upsetting to her (but she was determined to win) and she often asked herself why she left Paramount.

The film had a gala premiere and was chosen as the first film to be shown at the new Roxy Theater in New York. The film received good reviews but did not make money in the end.

Plot: A prostitute arrives in Pago Pago where she tangles with a hypocritical preacher who tries to reform her.

Swanson chose Somerset Maugham's controversial play "Rain" for her second independent production. She not only had to battle the censors on this one, but there were numerous other problems as well. A suitable leading man could not be found for the role of the marine who falls in love with Sadie and Gloria finally realized that the perfect man to play the role was director Raoul Walsh himself. He had not acted in several years and it took Gloria one week to convince him that he would be right for the role. Another problem arose with the cinematographer. She had borrowed George Barnes from Samuel Goldwyn and after three days of shooting, Goldwyn recalled Barnes to do a film for him. Since their contract stipulated a three day trial period, there was nothing that Gloria could do except find another cinematographer. She eventually went through three additional cinematographers before settling on Oliver Marsh. And, as before with Love of Sunya, the production went over budget and money had to be borrowed to complete the film.

Regardless of the setbacks, however, Sadie Thompson proved to be a critical and a box office success. Gloria was praised for delivering one of her best performances to date and she was nominated for her first Academy Award (the first year for the Awards) but she lost to Janet Gaynor.

Plot: A stenographer marries a rich man's son and they have a child. When the marriage is annulled by the son's parents, the woman fights to keep her son.

The Trespasser was Gloria Swanson's first talking film. She wanted to get a film out quickly following the Queen Kelly disaster and "talkies" were quickly gaining popularity. She met with rising director Edmund Goulding and they decided to collaborate on an original script together. They also hired Laura Hope Crews and the three of them worked on the story in Gloria's home for a month. The result was a taut script that was filmed on a sound stage in twenty one days. It was the fastest and least expensive project that Gloria was very involved with.

Gloria adapted well with sound filmmaking and The Trespasser was a tremendous success. In addition to her speaking voice, she sang a song called "Love, Your Magic Spell Is Everywhere" and audiences were excited to hear that she could sing as well as act. Gloria was nominated again for the Academy Award but she lost this time to Norma Shearer.

Plot: A rich widow goes to France where she is pursued by a line of handsome men.

Joe Kennedy wsa determined to produce a successful movie with Swanson. He commissioned the writing of a script and proudly presented it to Swanson, who didn't have the heart to tell him that it was terrible. Allan Dwan, one of Swanson's best directors, was called on board to make something out of it but he too thought that it was hopeless. They made the film anyway and it was a lackluster follow-up to The Trespasser and lacked any of the former Dwan/Swanson magic.

What a Widow actually terminated Swanson and Kennedy's relationship but it had nothing to do with the merits of the film. During the planning phases, Kennedy was looking for a title for the script and when screenwriter Sidney Howard came up with "What a Widow", Kennedy gave him a Cadillac. Swanson later found out that the car had been charged to her personal account! When she questioned Kennedy about it, he stormed out without a word and left Hollywood for good.

Plot: A woman falls in love with an author and attempts to follow the guidelines set forth in his book but ends up almost losing him as well as messing up the affairs of her sister.

Joe Kennedy left Swanson's financial affairs in shambles, so she promptly signed a million dollar contract with United Artists to do four films. The first, Indiscreet, was a light comedy with several songs thrown in for good measure. Swanson's first instinct was that the script was not very good and neither were the songs and, as usual, her instincts proved correct. Indiscreet was a forgettable film. Swanson was pregnant at the time of filming with her daughter Michele.

Plot: A couple who constantly fight with each other finally come to terms in divorce court.

Swanson produced A Perfect Understanding and it was a disastrous venture. It was filmed in England and the production was besieged by problems ranging from a contagious flu that spread among cast members to a laboratory fire which destroyed valuable footage. To top it all off, director Cyril Gardner was inexperienced and constantly fretted about a gypsy fortune teller who had foretold his premature death. Soon the production ran out of money and Swanson had to sell her United Artists stock to finish the film. The movie was released in the midst of the depression and did not fare well with audiences or the critics.

Swanson gave her husband, Michael Farmer, a small role in the film despite his limited acting ability.

Plot: Two bickering opera singers use another couple as a means of making each other jealous.

Care was taken to make this film a great success with good casting, meticulous construction of a Bavarian village as the set and several great songs that showcased Swanson nicely. It did not turn out that way, however, and the critics only gave it a passing glance. Swanson commented in her biography that audiences were more interested in Shirley Temple musicals.

Swanson's leading man was John Boles, whose first movie role was opposite her in The Love Of Sunya.

Plot: A newly married couple start arguing on their honeymoon and a stowaway Latin American singer helps them to clear up their differences.

Swanson was just thrilled to be offered a film after a seven year absence even though the script was very light fare. The film was heavily promoted as a Swanson comeback but it did poorly at the box office.

Swanson's next attempt at a comeback would be a different story however.

Plot: Romance blossoms on board a transcontinental train between an actress and a scientist.

After Sunset Boulevard, Swanson was given many scripts to read that were basically rehashes of Norma Desmond. She decided to do this film because it was a comedy. It was her first color film and although she still looked fabulous at age 51, the film itself was mediocre.

Plot: The matriarch of a wine plantation holds a strange affinity with a colony of killer bees.

The only full length television movie that Swanson did was this horror story that garnered a small degree of success and one that is still shown occasionally. Swanson had no qualms about filming some of her scenes covered with bees - after all, she had let a lion paw her in 1919 in Male and Female!
