IMDb - The film suffers more from the simplistic camera settings than from its significance as an early talkie. Whale's direction is handled perfunctorily as if recreating the stage play. There are a few scenes which go beyond this limitation but they are few in 120 minutes of film. The true success is the first film performance of Colin Clive who handled the material for Whale on stage as Captain Stanhope (after Laurence Olivier left the play after its initial run). Clive is cast perfectly as the tormented Captain (a mood he would later immortalize in Frankenstein). Ian McLaren also deserves recognition as the intelligently human face of Lt. Osbourne.

IMDb - DXC - KG - It is, of course, the music that makes "Show Boat," but James Whale, who directed the picture, has had the perception to hold to its melodic qualities without losing sight of the cinema's insistent need for action. Here is one of the few musical shows which is not merely a screened concert. The picture has a rhythmic pace and a balanced continuity of movement which is as exceptional as it is welcome. The story has been well told, drifting easily from sentiment and romance to gay comedy and gentle humor, with the song and dance interludes blending imperceptibly into its pattern.

IMDb - After World War I, a group of former German soldiers try to adjust to civilian life.
The Road Back has some signature Whale touches. Yes, the camera dollies through a wall from outside on a street to the inside of a building, following a character entering it. Dwight Frye, Edward Van Sloan, Lionel Atwill and a few other Whale favorites play minor characters with character. He had his usual crew of Ted Kent editing, John Mescall shooting, John Fulton with special effects and the great Charles D. Hall as set designer. You would expect a horror film with all these names. Yet the film does not stand up next to his horror films, nor to Show Boat, Kiss Before the Mirror and Waterloo Bridge. It is a notch below.

IMDb - The title would seem to suggest a biopic of the celebrated English actor but Whale and screenwriter Ernest Vajda concentrate instead on one curious incident (the fact that it never actually occurred is immaterial). Most of the director's typical qualities – and faults – are to be found in the film: his eye for pictorial detail (accentuated by Anton Grot's distinctive set design), the fluid camera-work (courtesy of Ernest Haller), the dry English humor, etc. However, he also tends to over-indulge his character actors (which, this being essentially a celebration of the art of performing, is hardly surprising in this case) and, consequently, the film's initial momentum isn't sustained throughout – the second half is somewhat chaotic and ham-fisted – but picks up again for the splendid finale. Nevertheless, Whale biographer James Curtis considers THE GREAT GARRICK his last wholly satisfying film.

IMDb - Caught at Cinecon 39 in Hollywood, this is a first-rate effort from director James Whale about an Austrian Prince exiled from his homeland during World War II who then finally decides to take a stand against the Nazis. Brent is solid in the lead; Paul Lukas is a great villain. Good to see Peter Cushing in a tiny but commanding role and Lloyd Bridges playing a German thug (which he'd done before). Lots of fun.

IMDb - Intended as a part of a multi-part film in the style of _Quartet (1949)_ , it was shot at the KTTV Studio in Los Angeles at a cost of $41,000, had one set, used natural sounds instead of music, and was rather impressionistic in its cinematic style.

[/size]
