Robert Siodmak's career is one of the more underrated and misunderstood in the history of Hollywood. The merit of Siodmak's cinematic art is also one of the most controversial. Among fanatic cinephiles, particularly those with a penchant for film noir thrillers, Siodmak is considered the primary architect of the genre. No other director has produced more quality film noir thrillers than Siodmak. His canon is a viewing list for any authentic study of the genre. His most notable film noirs include Phantom Lady, The Strange Affair of Uncle Harry, The Spiral Staircase, The Killers, The Dark Mirror, Cry of the City, Criss Cross and The File on Thelma Jordan. However, among a small minority of film critics, he is considered a one-dimensional “yes” man who simply followed marching orders established by studio executives. These critics suggest Siodmak's success was a direct product of the studio system and the cadre of filmmakers studios arranged for him. Lastly, Siodmak's popularity among casual movie fans is virtually nonexistent. Many have never heard of him, and when they have, they rarely can even pronounce his name (see-odd-mak – emphasis on the “odd”). The latter two assessments of Siodmak's career are inaccurate, because he was the primary auteur of one of America's most important film genres. Chris Justice, sensesofcinema

Imagen - Imagen - Imagen - Thats what makes this film even more special in my thinking. It showsthat there could have been potentially another Germany, and thatfascism was not the inevitable consequence of the social condition inthe early 30s, German national character or what so ever. In fact, Ithink thats why this master piece is not as well-known as it deservesto be. It does not fit the bill of 1920s Mabuse-style Germany, whereCaligari was an early warning of the Nosferatu was the blue-print of acoming dictator etc, all this Kracauer stuff.

The impressive camera set-upsintentionally give a slight overemphasis to individual elements in theframe, heightening the humour.

Others would have made a two hour feature with the story, this one takes 56 minutes in all. It starts straight away with our young hero trying to shoot a bullet into his head.

As manycomedies of the Depression era, "La Crise est Finie" was clearly designed to relieve the fear and tension of depression life. The plot is about the ups and downs of a troupe of youngcomedians trying to set up a new show.

Like in M themurderer keeps sending letter to the police it's about the mysteriousdisappearance of several Parisian women and in his search of themurderer the police hires the roommate of the latest victim to goundercover Marie Déa, in a very good performance and like the others victims she looks at the newspaper ads seeking young single women and she goes for it with Jean Témerson (inspector Bartol) who is protecting her and in one of the of the occasions she met Robert Fleury (Maurice Chevalier) and falls in love with him and like M the film is full of suspense and the murderer is not a normal person.

Also believe that Ms Kelly displayed hernice legs at least 2 times ,with Richard Carlson covering them up bypulling down her skirt, as she was lying ,havng fainted, on a couch. Ithink , if I remember correctly, that Richard Carlson, was a innocentman that got involved and could not help himself. Even though it was abpicture, the director gave it plenty of suspense and action. The bestnaturally, was the great ending. Naturally , it was a long time ago ,but it made quite an impression on me,especially since it was duringthe War. As I said before , I would be happy to find even a good copyof this film.

Imagen - Based on a true event Robert Siodmak made a very good, tragi-comic (andunderrated) satire on how during the 50's West Germany dealt with itsNazi-past. A postman shows civil courage in 1944 but still has to pay forthe consequences after WW2. The postman wrote Goering to stop the war afterwhich he was officially declared of unsound mind; it takes him 15 years toget rehabilitation.
This mix of comedy, satire and tragedy could have easily lead to an uneasy film. But Siodmak has a very tight directorial control thereby getting the right balance between the elements; there are some typical Siodmak trade marks too as the emphasis on the staircase.

Robert Siodmak (August 8, 1900 - March 10, 1973) was a German born American film director. Siodmak was born to a Jewish family in Dresden, Germany (the myth of his American birth in Memphis, Tennessee was necessary for him to obtain a visa in Paris). He worked as a stage director and a banker before becoming editor and scenarist for Kurt Bernhardt in 1925. At twenty-six he was hired by his cousin, producer Seymour Nebenzal, to assemble original silent movies from the stock footage of old ones. Siodmak worked at this for two years before he persuaded Nebenzal to finance his first feature, the silent chef d'oeuvre, Menschen am Sonntag in 1929.

With the rise of Nazism he left Germany for Paris and then Paris for Hollywood. Siodmak arrived in Hollywood in 1939, where he made 23 movies, many of them widely popular thrillers and crime melodramas, which critics regard today as classics of film noir. Beginning in 1941, he first turned out several B-films and programmers for various studios before he garnered a seven-year contract with Universal Studios in 1943. As house director, his services were often used to salvage troublesome productions at the studio. On Mark Hellinger's production "Swell Guy," for instance, Siodmak was brought in to replace Frank Tuttle only six days after completing work on "The Killers." At Universal, Siodmak began with yet another B-film, "Son of Dracula" (1943), the third and the best in a trilogy of Dracula movies (based on his brother Curt's original story). His second feature, and first A-film, was the Technicolor, Maria Montez-Jon Hall vehicle, "Cobra Woman" (1944).

But his first all-out noir was "Phantom Lady" in 1943, for staff producer Joan Harrison, Universal's first female executive and Alfred Hitchcock's former screenwriter. Following the critical success of "Phantom Lady," Siodmak directed "Christmas Holiday." And for the first time in Hollywood, his work attained the stylistic and thematic characteristics that are most astonishing in his later noirs. Today a rare, seldom-seen film, "Christmas Holiday" was the most successful feature to that date for star Deanna Durbin, and the one she considered her only good film. During Siodmak's tenure, Universal made the most of the noir style, but the capstone was "The Killers" in 1946. A critical and financial success, it earned Siodmak his only Oscar nomination for direction in Hollywood (his German production, "Nachts, Wenn Der Teufel Kam," would be nominated for best foreign film in 1956). The film is notable for many reasons, not the least of which is Burt Lancaster's debut.

Before leaving Hollywood for Europe in 1951, after the problematic production "The Crimson Pirate" for Warner Bros., his third and last film with Lancaster, Siodmak had directed some of the era's best film noirs, the most of any director who worked in that style, twelve in all. But his identification with film noir, generally unpopular with American audiences, may have been more of a curse than a blessing. He often expressed his desire to make pictures "of a different type and background" than the ones he had been making for ten years. Nevertheless, he ended his Universal contract with one last noir, the disappointing "Deported," (1951) which he filmed partly abroad (Siodmak was among the first refugee directors to return to Europe to make American films). Those "different types" of films he had made: "The Great Sinner" (1949) for MGM; "Time Out of Mind" (1947) for Universal (which Siodmak also produced); "The Whistle at Eaton Falls" (1951) for Columbia--all proved ill suited to his noir sensibilities (although "The Crimson Pirate," despite the difficult production, was a surprising and pleasant departure).

The five months he collaborated with Budd Schulberg on a screenplay tentatively titled "A Stone in the River Hudson," which later became "On the Waterfront," was a major disappointment too for Siodmak. So much so, in 1954 he sued producer Sam Spiegel for copyright infringement. Siodmak was awarded $100,000, but no screen credit. To this day his contribution to the original screenplay has never been acknowledged.

His return to Hollywood film-making in 1967 to make the wide-screen western "Custer of the West" was yet another disappointment. Siodmak fared better in Europe, especially with the British film "The Rough and the Smooth" (1959), another noir, but much meaner and gloomier than anything he had made in America. He ended his career with a six-hour, two-part toga and chariot epic, "Der Kampf um Rom" (1968), oddly more campy (perhaps intentionally, one hopes) than "Cobra Woman" had been. Like the Roman Empire, it too fell, but more quickly. There was a brief and profitable foray into television in Great Britain with the O.S.S. series in the late 1950s. Siodmak was last seen publicly in an interview for Swiss television at his home in Ascona in 1971. He died alone in 1973, seven weeks after his wife's death.

Muchas gracias :plas: :plas: :plas:

However, among a small minority of film critics, he is considered a one-dimensional “yes” man who simply followed marching orders established by studio executives. These critics suggest Siodmak's success was a direct product of the studio system and the cadre of filmmakers studios arranged for him.
Lastly, Siodmak's popularity among casual movie fans is virtually nonexistent.

scriptwriter Billy Wilder, director Robert Siodmak together with his brother Kurt Siodmak, Fred Zinnemann was "assistant" and the other co-director was Edgar G. Ulmer, all friends who met in Berlin in the Romanesque cafe, something like the cafe Berlin Gijón for writers and filmmakers.
