Briefly, "Doctor" John Pearly buys an old steamboat and names it the Clarmore Queen. He plans to refurbish it to run for profit with his nephew Duke (John McGuire I), who is a steamboat pilot. Doctor John sells an elixir that is nothing more than run and he runs a side show - a wax museum he picked up from some friends. One of the figures in the museum is a large whale head. The Stepin Fetchit character rolls out of the whale's mouth and so Doctor John dubs him Jonah.
On the way to join Doctor John, Duke befriends Fleety Belle (Anne Shirley) a beautiful young woman from the swamplands of Louisiana. On the way to meet John, Duke is forced to kill a man to protect Fleety Belle from rape. Duke talks it over with the only witness to the unfortunate incident: The New Moses (Berton Churchill). The evangelist roams the river country baptizing people and preaching against the demon rum. The New Moses tells Duke that his violence was in self-defense and not a crime, but that it would be best if he would turn himself in to the authorities.
In one of the first scenes, John is cooking supper on the boat when Duke arrives with Fleety Belle. Duke explains his situation, so John takes him to the sheriff's house. The sheriff (Eugene Pallette) has already retired for the night, so he tosses John the prison keys and says to leave them on his front door knob after he's dropped off DukeTwo of America's most distinguished humorists, Oklahoma's Will Rogers and Kentucky's Irvin S. Cobb, costar in Steamboat Round the Bend. Cobb isn't much of an actor, so it is Rogers who carries the comic weight of this fast-paced slice of Americana. Will uncharacteristically sticks to the script for most of the proceedings as the proprietor of a combination travelling waxworks and medicine show. The plot resolution hinges on a climactic steamboat race, in which Rogers' paddlewheeler is fed bit by bit into its own furnace when the fuel supply runs out. Steamboat Round the Bend was released posthumously after Rogers' sudden death, at which point Fox Studios tried unsuccessfully to create a "new" Will Rogers--in the form of his old friend and costar Irvin S. Sex Hygiene (1942)
Several servicemen relax by playing pool, but one of them goes off to spend time with a prostitute. Later, he discovers he has contracted a venereal disease. A graphic and frank presentation of the types and treatment of venereal disease follows.Every GI who has ever seen this never forgets it. Even though it was made in 1941, it was shown to new soldiers on a regular basis for at least 27 years. I saw it in 1968, when I joined up, and I know of one ex-GI who saw it when he enlisted in 1970. It could well be showing now, for all I know. The main difference between this and other training films is that it's far better produced and acted than virtually any other training film ever made. It was directed by John Ford, produced by Darryl Zanuck, and featured such professional Hollywood actors as Robert Lowery, Charles Trowbridge and George Reeves. If that wasn't enough to set it apart from the run-of-the-mill training film, then the footage of diseased faces, lips and other body parts was. Even more horrifying than that, though (for a newly enlisted 18- or 19-year-old, at least) was the footage of what someone who was suspected of having syphilis (which, by 1941 morality, meant anyone who had sexual contact of any kind) had to go through. Soldiers were required to report any sexual contact they had, and if they were suspected of being infected with syphilis, they were then examined by a doctor and given preventive "treatment" which involved a procedure too graphic and, frankly, nauseating to describe here. The film served its purpose, temporarily at least--if Hedy Lamar and Betty Grable had shown up naked outside the theater after this film was shown, no soldier would have gone within 50 feet of them (of course, that would have lasted for all of 10 minutes . . . )
Anyway, I don't recommend this for anyone with a weak stomach. Or a strong stomach. Or a VERY strong stomach. The footage of the effects of syphilis is extremely hard to take--which, after all, was the whole point of showing them.
