Sinopsis: Max Fisher (Jason Schwartzman) es un joven estudiante rebelde de Rushmore, una de las escuelas más prestigiosas del país. Editor del periódico de la escuela, capitán y presidente de numerosos clubs y sociedades, Max es también uno de los peores estudantes que ha tenido la historia de Rushmore, por eso, la idea de que algún día lo expulsen no para de rondarle por su cabeza. En un momento transcendental de su vida, Max se enamora de la elegante profesora Miss Cross (Olivia Williams), pero su conquista se ve frustrada cuando se entera de que su amigo, el Sr. Blume (Bill Murray), que además es padre de dos compañeros suyos de clase, también intentan conquistar el amor de la señorita Cross. Un chico diferente.Max Fischer es un estudiante de la academia Rushmore de dotes extraordinarias. Tras sus gafas de pasta negra y su aspecto de "repelente niño Vicente" se esconde un chico de gran sensibilidad, que no para de organizar actividades extraescolares: clubes de francés, esgrima, apicultura, astronomía; todos los deportes imaginables; dirección de obras de teatro... Además, es el preceptor de un estudiante más joven. Paradójicamente, sus notas no son demasiado buenas. El chico enseguida llama la atención de un millonario, el señor Bloom, padre de alumnos y benefactor del excluvisista colegio. Y de una profesora, la señorita Cross, de la que Max no puede evitar enamorarse, y para la cual se dispone a construir un acuario... ¡en medio del campo de béisbol de Rusmore!
Singular película escolar, que no se parece a ninguna otra. Wes Anderson, que también firma el guión, urde una trama divertidísima, de ritmo endiabladamente ágil, donde también hay lugar para alguna lagrimita. El film incluye apuntes biográficos del director, que confiesa que le encantaba montar obras de teatro en el colegio. A la vez, hay tiempo para tocar cuestiones como la búsqueda del amor, la amistad, el perdón, la iniciativa, la ayuda a los demás... El gran descubrimiento del film es el desconocido Jason Schwartzman, que da vida a Max. Le apoyan con enorme fuerza el subvalorado Bill Murray (Atrapado en el tiempo), la actriz Olivia Williams (El sexto sentido) y el veterano Seymour Cassel (candidato al Oscar por su papel en Faces, de John Cassavetes). AMG SYNOPSIS: After the highly acclaimed independent film Bottle Rocket, director Wes Anderson followed up with a quirky Touchstone Studios film entitled Rushmore. Written by Anderson and friend Owen Wilson (an actor in Armageddon and Anaconda), they created the story of Max Fischer, a highly eccentric 15-year-old boy who attends the tenth grade at Rushmore Academy. Played by Jason Schwartzman (Talia Shire's son and Francis Ford Coppola's nephew), Max is a poor student with big dreams and a love of extracurricular activities. Max is editor of the school newspaper and yearbook, president of the chess, astronomy, French, and German clubs, captain of the fencing team, and director of the school play. Max is also a compulsive liar, telling everyone that his barber father (Seymour Cassel) is really a brain surgeon. Suddenly Max falls in love with Miss Cross (Olivia Williams), a first-grade teacher at the school. He also makes a new friend in business tycoon Mr. Blume (Bill Murray), an eccentric millionaire who also loves Miss Cross. The love triangle heats up as Max refuses to believe that his age has anything to do with Miss Cross refusing his romantic advances. Also Max's scheme to erect an aquarium on the school baseball diamond gets him booted out of Rushmore Academy. As his life crumbles around him, he is forced to grow up and accept the consequences of his actions and his lies. AMG REVIEW: Defying slick 1990s teen-flick clichés, Rushmore (1998) is a humorously deadpan, emotionally sincere coming-of-age story. Though set in the 1990s, writer/director Wes Anderson and co-writer Owen Wilson evoke a 1960s and '70s spirit of unabashed iconoclasm and eccentricity, complete with a '60s British Invasion soundtrack; Max Fischer is a non-suicidal Harold Chasen crossed with an ambitious Benjamin Braddock. Anderson, Wilson, and novice actor (and Francis Ford Coppola nephew) Jason Schwartzman dare to make Max a self-assured nerd and a wrong-side-of-the-tracks prodigy who is never simperingly likable even as he succeeds in charming friends and enemies. Along with Max's comically zealous, film-literate stage productions of Serpico and the Vietnam War, Anderson's astute widescreen compositions, film-speed shifts, and camera movements similarly recall French and American New Wave vitality. Among the excellent cast, Bill Murray gives a career-best performance as the despondent tycoon who sees a kindred spirit in the bespectacled teen, exuding genuine sadness about his life while he goes mano a mano with Max for teacher Olivia Williams' affection. Earning high marks for wit and originality (but sadly no Oscar nomination for Murray), Rushmore served notice that the creators of cult favorite Bottle Rocket (1996) had truly arrived. -- Lucia Bozzola
