Sinopsis: Alexander, un ex-actor convertido ahora en distinguido crítico de arte, festeja su cumpleaños con su esposa, sus hijos, su amigo médico Viktor y el cartero de la aldea Otto. La fiesta la preparan dos camareras, una de ellas Julia y la otra Maria, una misteriosa mujer islandesa con fama de bruja buena. De repente todo se sacude, a causa de una escuadrilla de aviones que pasa rozando el suelo. En un televisor se oye la voz triste de un gobernante que anuncia peligros y desastres: una guerra total y definitiva. El festejado Alexander cae de rodillas recitando el Padre Nuestro y pidiéndole a Dios que aleje los horrores que se anuncian, prometiéndole la renuncia a todo lo que posee: casa, afectos, familia. Durante la fiesta de cumpleaños del veterano dramaturgo Alexander, llega una fatal noticia, confirmada por temblores y movimiento aéreo: ha estallado una guerra mundial. En un acto de fe y sacrificio, Alexander reza a Dios, ofreciéndole todo lo que posee, e incluso a sus seres queridos, para que detenga la catástrofe en marcha.
Cine contemplativo, reposado, que explora las interioridades del alma, las angustias que atenazan al ser humano. Una auténtica obra maestra. Con una espléndida fotografía del más fiel colaborador de Ingmar Bergman, Sven Nykvist, Tarkovsky rodó este film cuando ya estaba enfermo y próximo a la muerte. Estas circunstancias se dejan notar en Sacrificio, una fuente constante a la reflexión de carácter humanista. En una votación efectuada por los críticos de la prestigiosa revista "Dirigido por" fue elegida como la mejor película de la década de los 80. Ciertamente la filmografía de este director ruso, densa y de una profundidad emocional y filosófica como pocas veces ha dado el cine, no es muy amplia, pero prácticamente todas sus películas son consideradas obras maestras (DeCine21).

Alexandre est un écrivain superstitieux qui s'est installé avec sa famille sur l'une des îles que comprend la Suède. Ses deux amis Victor, médecin et Otto, ancien professeur à la retraite viennent lui rendre visite pour son anniversaire. Quelques temps plus tard, Alexandre entend aux actualités qu'une catastrophe nucléaire mondiale a eu lieu. AMG SYNOPSIS: The Sacrifice, director Andrei Tarkovsky's final film, begins in Bergmanesque fashion on a small, remote island, where friends and family gather for drama critic Alexander's (Erland Josephson) birthday celebration. The revelry is interrupted by a radio announcement: World War III has begun, and Mankind is only hours away from utter annihilation. Each of the guests reacts differently to the news: the most dramatic response is Alexander's, who promises God that he'll give up everything he holds dear--including his beloved 6-year-old son -- if war is averted. Allan Edwall, a local mailman with purported mystical powers, offers to intervene with the Creator on Josephson's behalf. The Sacrifice is so dependent upon its visuals and overall mood that any attempt at a detailed synopsis would be woefully inadequate. The willingness of Tarkovsky's protagonist to forego all his possessions may well have sprung from the cancer-ridden director's awareness that he, too, would soon be giving up everything to face his Maker. AMG REVIEW: Andrei Tarkovsky's final film is an appositely apocalyptic work that serves as a fitting capstone to a brilliant and much too short career. Incorporating many of the thematic and formal concerns of the Soviet master's career, the film has a twilit, haunted quality, no doubt imparted by its ominous nuclear holocaust scenario and Tarkovsky's death from cancer just months after its completion. This parable of belief and redemption seems located on the edge of the world. The children of an esteemed, retired actor gather at the family's far-flung country house to celebrate his birthday. The eerie tranquillity is shattered by the roar of passing jets and news from the continent that a nuclear war has broken out. As always with Tarkovsky, the plot is hardly the point. The eschatological story occasions the kind of grave philosophical and spiritual inquiry that has defined Tarkovsky's movies. Shot by Ingmar Bergman's longtime cinematographer Sven Nykvist, The Sacrifice contains some of the most powerful images in Tarkovsky's monumental oeuvre. Perhaps it's most transcendent moment is the penultimate scene, an epic, six-minute-long take that stands as one of the wonders of cinema.
