El nuevo.Los hermanos Coen homenajean, a la vez que lo caricaturizan, el cine clásico de Frank Capra. Y lo hacen a través de la historia de Norville Barnes (Tim Robbins), un ingenuo joven recien licenciado en empresariales, que es contratado por una empresa el mismo día que su fundador se ha suicidado saltando desde la ventana de la Sala de Juntas en el piso 44. Sidney J. Mussburger, brazo derecho del fallecido, decide elegir como nuevo presidente de la compañía a Norville Barnes, al que considera un idiota, para conseguir que bajen los precios de las acciones de la compañia.
El resultado es una brillante comedia, con grandes golpes de humor. Tambien es de destacar el efecto visual conseguido por los Coen, en particular el peliculiar "look" del Nueva York de los años 50. La película cuenta con grandes secuencias tales como las impresionantes caídas desde el rascacielos (DeCine21).
AMG SYNOPSIS: Joel Coen and Ethan Coen concocted this stylish screwball comedic amalgam of Frank Capra and Howard Hawks. Tim Robbins stars as Norville Barnes, a dull-wit from Muncie, Indiana who wrangles a job with the big Hudsucker Industries. He has a singular idea for a new children's toy that he wants to present to corporate executive Sidney J. Mussberger (Paul Newman). As he makes his way up to Mussberger's office, the company president Waring Hudsucker (Charles Durning) is on his way down -- through the window of the forty-fourth floor boardroom! Hudsucker's death sets off a panic that Mussberger sees as an opportunity for taking over the company -- by installing a total incompetent in Hudsucker's place and devaluing the stock. When Barnes stumbles into Mussberger's office, Mussberger sees his pigeon and appoints Barnes as the new company president. The only problem is that the new product Barnes proposes for the company, the Hula Hoop, turns out to be a tremendous success, and Mussberger has difficulty manipulating his new corporate president. -- Paul Brenner
AMG REVIEW: The biggest, busiest film the Coen brothers had created at the time, The Hudsucker Proxy found the team working with their largest budget and most oversized canvas to date, and meeting with an indifference they couldn't have anticipated. Past detractors had dismissed Coen efforts like Blood Simple and Miller's Crossing as exercises in pastiche, synthesizing found elements into a new contraption. Hudsucker Proxy fits firmly in that mold, but such charges matter only if you view them as flaws. Those who see matters otherwise should find Hudsucker thrilling through and through. Though clearly delighted with a budget to accommodate their wildest visual notions, the Coens nonetheless never let their vision get ahead of them, incorporating it all into re-creating a corporate America in the grips of the postwar economic boom, at once giddy and insecure with newfound prosperity. Into this world, they drop a sly reworking of Frank Capra's Mr. Deeds Goes to Town, and if their New York has an even meaner edge to it than Capra's, the film still ends up subscribing to the same endorsement of common decency and critique of urban elitism (with more than a few digs at heartless capitalism thrown in for good measure). Being a Coen film, decency comes embodied by a big lug, played by Tim Robbins, whose own obvious intelligence has never prohibited him from excelling at playing thick-skulled protagonists. He's nicely matched by Jennifer Jason Leigh as a jaded reporter, whose ability to convey real humanity beneath layers of mannerisms may make her the ideal Coen heroine. -- Keith Phipps
