Sinopsis: II Guerra Mundial, Isla de Guadalcanal, 1942. El sinsentido de la guerraSegunda Guerra Mundial. Invasión de Guadalcanal por tropas estadounidenses. El soldado Witt (Jim Caviezel), que se había refugiado en una isla paradisíaca, es obligado a reincorporarse a filas. Allí, en medio del horror de la batalla, convive con compañeros muy dispares: el escéptico sargento Welsh (Sean Penn); el dubitativo capitán Staros (Elias Koteas); el enamorado soldado Bell (Ben Chaplin); el belicoso y resuelto teniente coronel Tall (Nick Nolte); y otros muchos. Todos quedan marcados por la experiencia bélica. Sus pensamientos persisten a lo largo de las casi 3 horas de metraje, con sus distintas voz en off.
El film, Oso de Oro en Berlín y candidato a 7 Oscar, muestra el dolor y las terribles heridas propias del combate. Pero va más allá. En un escenario de gran belleza, se asiste al miedo y a cómo se mina la moral de los combatientes. Conviven escenas de cuerpos mutilados con estampas bellísimas de la naturaleza. La misma lucha cobra cierto atractivo estético. El misterioso cineasta Terrence Malick (autor dos filmes visualmente subyugantes, Malas tierras y Días del cielo) vuelve de un retiro de casi 20 años con una arriesgada meditación sobre la guerra. Su adaptación de la novela de James Jones es profundamente personal y reflexiva, pausada; se aleja de la versión que en 1964 hiciera Andrew Marton, o de De aquí a la eternidad (1953) de Fred Zinnemann, basada en una novela de Jones. El director apuesta por el lirismo y el pensamiento sobre la condición humana, aunque hace convivir esa opción con abundantes escenas de acción bélica. Los personajes tienen hondura, vida interior. Sobre el telón de fondo de un profundo pesimismo sobre la condición humana, cuelgan diversas situaciones individuales que al final parecen casi coincidentes, en el sentido de que no hay asideros donde uno pueda agarrarse: ya sean Dios, la mujer amada o el teórico paraíso de los indígenas, al final resultan falibles. El espectador acaba preguntándose con Sean Penn dónde está "la chispa" capaz de dar un poco de luz a tanta oscuridad.
Entre las muchas secuencias impactantes que incluye la película, destaca la de la difícil toma de una colina, narrada con auténtico rigor militar. Los distintos comportamientos (pánico, horror, heroísmo, aunque no se le llame con ese nombre...) resultan muy reveladores de la condición humana y resultan creíbles. A destacar la fotografía de John Toll y la música de Hans Zimmer (DeCine21).
AMG SYNOPSIS: The return of director Terrence Malick to feature filmmaking after a twenty year sabbatical, this World War II drama is an elegiac rumination on man's destruction of nature and himself, based on James Jones' semi-autobiographical novel, his follow-up to From Here to Eternity. James Caviezel stars as Private Witt, a deserter living in peace and harmony with the natives of a Pacific island paradise. Captured by the Navy, Witt is debriefed by a senior officer (Sean Penn) and returned to an active duty unit preparing for what will be the Battle of Guadalcanal. As Witt goes ashore in the company of his fellow soldiers, they meet diverse fates. Sergeant Keck (Woody Harrelson) is killed by an exploding grenade. Captain John Gaff (John Cusack) is an intelligent, sober leader facing the destruction of his command because his commanding officer Colonel Tall (Nick Nolte) is bucking for a general's star. Sergeant McCron (John Savage) loses his mind. Private Bell (Ben Chaplin) gets a "Dear John" letter from his beloved wife. However, as the U.S. troops advance up grassy slopes toward entrenched Japanese positions, it is Witt's voiced-over ruminations on life, death, and nature that are the real heart and soul of The Thin Red Line (1998). Adrien Brody appears as Private Fife, the major character of Jones' novel and the author's alter-ego, although Fife has been relegated to a minor supporting role by Malick's filmed adaptation. -- Karl Williams
AMG REVIEW: Reclusive director Terrence Malick's long-awaited return to filmmaking, The Thin Red Line is a beautifully rendered treatise on man and nature, revisiting World War II as few films have. Malick isn't interested in the traditional, linear rhythms of the James Jones novel on which the film is based; instead, he fashions an atypically unfocussed and philosophical war story, using the material as a blueprint. In the process, the director reveals the complex hopes and fears of men who are often portrayed as mere patriots in a fight they understand and accept. Some of the star cameos -- from John Travolta and George Clooney, among others -- may feel like just that: characters are intended to make transient but memorable appearances. Also uncharacteristic of war pictures is John Toll's lush cinematography, which offers the limitless beauty of the South Pacific as a startling backdrop to the folly of humanity. With The Thin Red Line, Malick creates a anti-war movie that is as intelligent and visually beautiful as it is unique. -- Matthew Doberman
