Sinopsis: 1945. Durante la ocupación japonesa de China, en un pequeño pueblo de campesinos el ejército deja bajo custodia a dos prisioneros. Se ordena al pueblo que los tenga bajo vigilancia hasta que los recojan el próximo año. Los líderes del pueblo se reúnen para interrogar a los prisioneros e intentan acomodarlos. Comentario:
Jiang Wen, que realizaba con ésta su segunda película, parece imitar en algunos aspectos a la exagerada farsa "Underground", del director bosnio Emir Kusturica. El espectador pronto se sentirá sobrecogido por el mismo mensaje sobre lo absurdo de la guerra, pero Jiang lo combina con bastantes elementos que le dan un singular y personal matiz. La historia remite a una época poco conocida para la mayoría de los espectadores occidentales, en un momento en que las relaciones entre China y Japón vuelven a tensarse: Jiang pone pasión en el empeño y un punto de vista muy personal que le valió la censura de la Oficina de Cine de Pekín y prácticamente el destierro artístico de China.
Los demonios del título no son sino los japoneses que cometieron atrocidades en territorio chino; pero como hiciera Stanley Kubrick en sus agudas “Senderos de Gloria” y “Teléfono rojo: volamos hacia Moscú”, Jiang centra su escarnio en las autoridades, no sólo de Japón sino de China, su país, llenando de humanidad a los personajes más humildes. Entiende, además, el lado humano del soldado raso japones, cargando la crítica sobre los altos rangos. El humor, sorprendentemente, se cuela a través de los horrores que el director narra sin miramientos, haciéndolos soportables gracias a su ingenio pero sin restarles un ápice de crueldad. Cuando los conflictos bélicos se deshumanizan, como es el caso, el espectador no puede más que temblar y rezar: Jiang hiela la sangre y nos fuerza a ver en su película el reflejo de nuestras pasiones.
A Wen Jiang lo conocimos primero como actor, en “Keep Cool” (obra de Zhang Yimou). Allí hacía de librero ambulante frenético en plena urbe. En su actuación se veía poder interpretativo y gran carisma. Aquí Jiang, pese a querer mostrar los horrores de la guerra y de la ocupación japonesa en China, decide tomar dos arriesgadas pero al final acertadas decisiones. La primera es que está rodada en blanco y negro. Arriesgado es, porque las comparaciones que hará mucha gente con otros dramas bélicos serán inminentes. Pero Jiang, de esta forma, termina creando una realidad creíble pero a la vez surrealista. Hay momentos que la realidad golpea de tal forma a esta comunidad de campesinos chinos que el blanco y negro de la pantalla parece darle irrealidad. ¿Estará pasando en verdad? Está claro que sí, pero la fuerza de las imágenes es mayor cuando no hay colores. Paradójicamente la realidad está reforzada con dramatismo irreal.
La segunda decisión es la elección del género. La comedia de la vida, la comedia de lo cotidiano. Incluso en el infierno se puede reír, también en momentos duros te puedes encontrar con situaciones que más tarde se podrían contar como anécdotas graciosas aunque en ese momento no lo sean. El paso continuo de comedia a drama se desarrolla en casi toda la historia. Esta relación termina cuando Jiang decide mostrar la realidad de forma brutal y es cuando la historia deviene al drama puro. Todo esto está rematado por unos actores geniales: el mismo Jiang Wen y Teruyuki Kagawa sobresalen por su naturalidad. Parece que están allí. Que lo han vivido y que han sufrido y reído de verdad.
El guión es excelente y la dirección inspirada. Si alguien viera de casualidad, esta película en la televisión (entre el principio y la mitad de la película), podría creer que esta viendo algún clásico de Akira Kurosawa, Mizoguchi, Ozu, Kobayashi u otro gran director del cine japonés (Casa de la Cultura de Cancún).
AMG Synopsis: Renowned actor Jiang Wen directs this sweeping look at a small Chinese village located near the Great Wall during the closing days of WWII. As Japanese soldiers march up and down the village's main thoroughfare, Ma Dasan (Wen) is making love with his widowed lover Yu'er (Jiang Hongbo). Suddenly, there is a knock at the door and a gun at Ma's head. He is informed that for the next week he is to house two gagged and bound prisoners, one a fanatical Japanese soldier, the other a Chinese translator -- and to interrogate the pair. The village elders uneasily question the two, while the translator intentionally mistranslates the epithets and insults from the soldier. When the Chinese resistance fighters do not return to pick up the prisoners, the villagers panic and order Ma to execute them. Ma, in turn, panics and tries to hide the cantankerous duo in the Great Wall -- that is until the villagers discover his ruse and almost lynch him, despite a strongly worded defense by Yu'er. Six months later, the villagers become increasingly worried about boarding these prisoners, lest they all be branded collaborators. This film won the prestigious Grand Prix at the 2000 Cannes Film Festival.
AMG Review: Jiang Wen's mordant World War II epic was a huge hit with international critics, but nearly sunk his career when Chinese authorities banned the film and exiled Jiang from the movie industry. Set during Japan's brutal occupation of China during the war, Devils on the Doorstep plays like a broad black comedy in its first half. The film's humor is predicated on cultural misunderstanding and farcical convolutions, as a group of peasants in Northern China bicker over what they should do with two unwanted Japanese captives that have been left in their custody by shadowy resistance fighters. As the plot unravels, however, the rollicking tone curdles into hysterical outrage, and the inexorable illogic of war sets in. The movie's climactic set piece is a village feast amid a truce, with the Japanese soldiers and Chinese peasants celebrating side-by-side in a startling show of bonhomie. Reminiscent of a famous bonfire party scene in Olivier Assayas's Cold Water, the sequence keeps you on edge -- the raging bacchanal threatens to careen out of control, and the precarious harmony seems poised for an inevitable upending. The latest in a long line of tragicomic antiwar works, Devils on the Doorstep doesn't really say anything new about the horrors of war and the human condition. With its expansive scope, expressive mise-en-scene and absurdist spirit, however, Jiang's movie proves itself a worthy addition to an unfortunately relevant genre.
