Sinopsis: Narra la amistad de dos niños de familias muy dispares en el Japón de la posguerra. (FILMAFFINITY)
Synopsis: A wayfaring boat docks opposite a riverside noodle shop in Osaka. The shopowner's son makes friends with the children who arrive from the boat, and slowly comes to understand the illicit trade it conducts. Told from the boy's perspective, this is a story of new friendship and the fresh discoveries of childhood, as well as that state of seeing and knowing things about grownup life for which one does not even have words yet to name. At the other end of life, the boy's father, who came late to parenthood at the age of 40, ponders the senseless death of a shop patron, carries with him memories of the war, and thinks back on the woman he abandoned long ago after finishing military service. There is much that is palpably felt but left unsaid about the inner lives of children and grownups because of the film's sensitive and perceptive attention, and because the characters are shown in the very process of understanding it for themselves. The film opens and closes with the long, ever flowing river - a fitting emblem for the passage of time, and the currents connecting young and old, present and past.
